The Just Cause series, one of the most popular franchises created by Square Enix, is on its way to becoming a film, bringing our favorite Latino character, Rico Rodriguez, to the big screen after numerous reports since 2010. Fans are buzzing with excitement, but with so many expectations, the question remains: who is behind this adaptation, and can they deliver?
The Just Cause franchise made a significant impact when the first game launched in 2006, introducing players to Rico Rodriguez, also known as The Scorpion. Equipped with a parachute, a grappling hook, and an arsenal of guns, this thrilling combination allowed players to zipline across fields while engaging in action-packed shootouts—a formula that captivated millions. With over 15 million copies sold worldwide, it’s no wonder that the franchise is finally getting the movie treatment.
According to The Wrap, Aaron Rabin is set to pen the screenplay for this long-awaited adaptation. Rabin is recognized for his acclaimed work on the series Jack Ryan, led by John Krasinski. He will be collaborating with director Ángel Manuel Soto, known for his recent hit, DC’s Blue Beetle. The film will be produced by 87North Productions, with industry veterans Kelly McCormick and David Leitch—who have produced notable action films like Bullet Train and Nobody—taking charge.
Additionally, Story Kitchen Productions, which has credits for projects such as Netflix’s Tomb Raider and Paramount’s Sonic The Hedgehog, will contribute to the production. Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson from Story Kitchen are set to co-produce alongside executive producer Dan Jevons. Although cast details remain a mystery, a 2017 report from Variety suggested that Jason Momoa could potentially star, although this remains speculative.
With this impressive lineup of talent, the Just Cause movie aims to vividly bring Rico Rodriguez’s thrilling escapades to life, ensuring it does justice to the beloved game franchise. As anticipation builds, fans are eager to see if Hollywood can successfully capture the high-octane chaos and exhilarating combat that made the game a standout favorite.
