Ben Affleck is advancing with his next project, titled Animals, but without his long-time collaborator Matt Damon. This film, a Netflix exclusive, is a thrilling narrative centered around a significant kidnapping, which assuredly adds an intense layer of suspense. Unfortunately, it will not feature Damon, who was originally set to star in the project.
Damon had to withdraw from the film due to scheduling conflicts with Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, set to release on July 17, 2026. However, he will remain involved as a producer through his production company, Artists Equity, alongside Affleck. Affleck not only directs the film but also takes on a starring role, ensuring his creative vision is central to the project.
In a surprising twist, Affleck has reportedly cast Emmy-winning actress Gillian Anderson from Sex Education to fill the void left by Damon. The screenplay for Animals has been crafted by Billy Ray, known for his work on Captain Phillips and Secret in Their Eyes, in collaboration with Connor McIntyre. As soon as the script reaches completion, Affleck plans to commence filming in Los Angeles.
Initially, Affleck aimed to direct Animals last year, but a legal complication impeded the process. According to Deadline, there was a “holdup with the rights that delayed the start of production, prompting Affleck to pivot and work on a sequel to The Accountant instead, pushing Animals further down the line.”
The Accountant 2 is scheduled for release on Netflix on April 25, 2025. This sequel sees Affleck’s character, a skilled money launderer for dangerous mobsters, teaming up with his brother Brax, portrayed by John Bernthal, as they pursue enigmatic assassins.
Those eager for a collaboration between Affleck and Damon will still have the opportunity with RIP, an upcoming Netflix crime thriller from writer-director Joe Carnahan. As the synopsis reveals, “Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray,” indicating further complications as outside forces start to discover the seized cash.
