James Gunn Wonder Woman DCU Teaser Hints at Nubia’s Arrival—A New Heroine Set to Join the Franchise?

James Gunn has sparked excitement among DC fans by hinting at the possible introduction of Nubia in the DC Universe, linking directly to ongoing Wonder Woman developments in the franchise. The James Gunn Wonder Woman DCU teaser raises questions about new characters and representation set to unfold in upcoming projects.

The DCU under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran started in December 2024 with “Creature Commandos.” Anticipation is growing as Gunn’s Superman film approaches its release, and several other DC projects are on the horizon. Recently, Gunn confirmed that a film focused on Diana Prince—Wonder Woman—is currently being written, ensuring fans that the Amazonian heroine remains central to the evolving DCU.

Possible Inclusion of Nubia in the Expanding DC Universe

During an interview with Pay or Wait, Gunn was asked about plans for Nubia, a significant character from DC Comics who has a rich history within Wonder Woman’s world. Gunn addressed the question directly:

“I’m very aware of Nubia. Yes, we are very much talking about that. I want to have all sorts of people represented in the DCU. And, yeah, you might be happy in the not-too-distant future.”

Nubia, first appearing in 1973’s “Wonder Woman #204,” was created by Robert Kanigher and Don Heck. She holds the distinction of being DC’s first Black female superhero, originally introduced as Diana’s long-lost sister. Over the years, Nubia’s role has grown in the comics, and she is now recognized as Queen of the Amazons, adding another layer to the mythology around Wonder Woman and her homeland.

New Projects Expanding the Wonder Woman Mythos

The introduction of Nubia is likely to take place in the newly announced Wonder Woman movie, though DC Studios is also developing “Paradise Lost,” a series set on the island of Themyscira prior to Diana’s birth. Announced in January 2023, “Paradise Lost” aims to dive deeper into the origins and legacy of the Amazons, though no official premiere date has been set for the series yet. Additionally, the Wonder Woman feature does not have a confirmed release schedule, and casting decisions remain under wraps for now, keeping details about Nubia’s potential involvement speculative but intriguing.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Superman film will debut in theaters across the United States and in IMAX on July 11, 2025, with Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios overseeing the launch. As announcements continue to unfold, fans and industry watchers remain attentive to further developments regarding Nubia and her place within both the Wonder Woman story and the broader DCU.

The focus on expanding representation through characters like Nubia signals a shift in the DCU, aiming to honor diverse legacies from the comics while building anticipation for new narratives and heroes. With major releases lined up and storylines in motion, the stage is set for significant changes in the superhero landscape as James Gunn and his team move forward.
