Reese Witherspoon might just be ready to suit up for the Super Bowl! The Morning Show star, 48, teamed up with hall-of-fame quarterback Peyton Manning in a new clip shared on Instagram on Sunday, February 9, as the retired NFL star taught the actress the proper way to toss a football. “Who knew filming #YoureCordiallyInvited would come with quarterback lessons from @PeytonManning,” Witherspoon captioned the clip. “Chiefs, Eagles… if you need an extra arm, I’m available! 🏈,” she joked.
In the short video, the former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos star, 48, opened his lesson by letting Witherspoon know that, before anything, holding a football is “all about the grip.” After Manning showed her which fingers to place on which laces, the Oscar winner made a somewhat confused face to the camera. “Where are we throwing it?” Witherspoon asked Manning, who informed her that she’d be throwing it directly to him.
“So first thing you’re gonna do is you’re gonna wipe the windshield,” he said, describing the movements of his non-throwing arm. “Then you elbow the short person… So you kind of flick the booger off your finger.” After some “oohs” and “ahs,” Witherspoon gave it a try herself, standing on the other side of an office space as she tossed the ball to Manning and mimicked his movements. “Like that,” he said, approving. “Perfect!”
The new clip from Manning and Witherspoon is not their first team-up, as the football star makes a cameo in the actress’ latest comedy, You’re Cordially Invited, which arrived on Amazon Prime Video on January 30. During his brief appearance, Manning stars as himself, pitching an idea to Witherspoon’s wedding-planner character, Margaret. In their latest social media clip, the duo is sporting the same outfits they wear in the film, seemingly meaning the football lesson with the NFL great took place behind the scenes.
Will Ferrell stars alongside Witherspoon in the comedy film, playing Jim, the father of the bride, with Witherspoon starring as the sister of a different bride. Chaos ensues when the duo finds out their wedding parties have been accidentally double-booked at the same remote venue. The Nicholas Stoller-directed movie also features Jimmy Tatro, Leanne Morgan, Ramona Young, Jack McBrayer, Celia Weston, and others, marking Ferrell and Witherspoon’s first onscreen team-up since appearing together in a skit on Saturday Night Live in 2001.
As for their first impressions of each other back then, Witherspoon told PEOPLE last month that “[Ferrell] was the big attraction of the show. Everybody wanted a skit with you.” Ferrell, meanwhile, remembered thinking Witherspoon was “really talented” on SNL. “I mean, that’s a hard show to do, but you hid your fear really well,” he said.
This recent collaboration and football lesson not only showcase Witherspoon’s fun-loving spirit but also highlight the camaraderie between her and Manning, resonating well with fans eager for both sports and entertainment. Witherspoon’s lighthearted engagements may just be a hint that she’s ready to take on a new challenge, capturing the excitement of her followers as they anticipate what comes next.
