Anne Hathaway Reveals Why She Thought Interstellar’s Space Suit Was The Worst Costume Ever: ‘I Can’t Be The One That Breaks!’

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, celebrated as one of the greatest films in cinema history, recently marked its tenth anniversary with a re-release in various regions, including India. Among the myriad tales from the film, actress Anne Hathaway, who portrays a scientist, has shared her candid thoughts regarding the space suits worn during production, calling them the worst costumes she has ever experienced.

Interstellar, which garnered an Oscar for Best Visual Effects and grossed over $748 million worldwide, features an impressive cast including Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Matt Damon. The film’s gripping narrative follows a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, on a mission to secure a new planet for humanity as Earth faces devastation.

In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Hathaway opened up about the challenges she faced due to the space suits. She recalled, “The worst costume I’ve ever had was on Interstellar. Oh, those spacesuits were, they were hard. And you know we were in pretty rugged conditions. We were in Iceland; we were running through water. We were, you know, climbing glaciers.” Feeling the weight of being the only woman in the crew, she reflected on her determination, stating, “I can’t complain about this. It can’t be me that breaks.”

Her sentiments were echoed by co-star Matt Damon, who humorously broke the ice during filming. He confessed, “Then, your buddy Matt Damon came in and started his first day. And about two hours into it, he just pitched forward and went, ‘This is the worst f***ing costume I’ve ever worn.’ And it was OK, because once Matt Damon said it then the rest of us could complain.” This moment of honesty amongst the cast created a more open environment for discussing their discomforts.

Interstellar remains a notable achievement in modern cinema, earning $203.2 million domestically and capturing the hearts of audiences with its poignant storytelling and stunning visuals. The film’s re-release in India on February 7 was met with enthusiasm, generating approximately 10 crores at the box office during its limited showing.

The significance of Hathaway’s comments on the worst costume in Interstellar reminds fans that even amid the grandeur of filmmaking, there are real struggles behind the scenes. As the film continues to resonate with viewers, it also serves as a reminder of the passion and commitment actors display, even when faced with discomfort. As fans revisit this cinematic masterpiece, they gain insight into the challenges actors endure, enhancing their appreciation for the film and its storytelling prowess.
