Billy Bob Thornton, Sam Elliott Shine in Landman Season 2

Billy Bob Thornton Landman Season 2 returns with heightened drama, as the acclaimed series revisits the Texas oil industry through new challenges for Tommy Norris and introduces Sam Elliott’s character in a pivotal family role. The latest season, premiering almost a year after the inaugural installment on Paramount+, deepens both personal and professional complexities for the main cast, setting an intense and emotionally charged tone from the very first episode.

New Leadership and Family Tensions Define Season Two

After the turbulent events of the Season 1 finale, Tommy Norris, portrayed by Billy Bob Thornton, is now stepping into his role as president of the fictional M-Tex Oil company. His new position brings a fresh set of hurdles in both his business and private life. Michelle Randolph’s Ainsley, Tommy’s daughter, has begun her college journey, while his relationship with Angela, his on-again/off-again spouse, played by Ali Larter, remains unpredictable and fraught with conflict. The return of Tommy’s father, played by Sam Elliott, further disrupts the family’s delicate balance, promising a season marked by emotional confrontations and attempts at reconciliation.

Sam Elliott Joins the Cast, Bringing Depth and Experience

Sam Elliott, renowned for his past work with Taylor Sheridan on “1883,” joins the ensemble as Tommy’s father, adding generational tension and an additional layer to the show’s family saga. Reflecting on his involvement, Elliott remarked,

“I wasn’t roped into it by anybody. I’d worked for Taylor before on another show. And it’s another time and another opportunity to just continue on with him. It’s one of the great gifts I’ve had in my career and I’ve been very fortunate in my career. But I don’t think anything better has come along than 1883 and now this thing. It’s just a joy to go to work, and the opportunity to work with this guy sitting next to me, it doesn’t get any better than this.”

The dynamic between Tommy Norris and his father is strained as the season begins. Billy Bob Thornton describes their state as “very fractured,” and the storyline focuses on whether and how the two can mend their relationship. Thornton shared,

“Sam puts it best, we start the season when Pop comes home, with a very fractured relationship. It’s just a process of what we go through to try to mend it … or whatever happens.”

Unresolved Conflicts and Emotional Trials

The Norris household is a focal point for drama, with Tommy facing constant pressure without respite. Explaining his character’s nonstop challenges, Thornton noted,

“He gets enough. It’s 24-hours-a-day for Tommy. There’s no whistle blowing at the end of the day.”

Elliott’s role allows him to explore a character immersed in emotional struggle, which he considers a highlight of his career.

“It’s an incredible cast. It’s nothing but fun. To put it mildly, I get to go from like a-to-z somehow on this thing. It started out in this really dark place. And by the time Season 2 is over, he’s on his way to being healed. He’s still in a hole and I never get out of it, and it’s a real emotional dark spot for most of the trip for this character this season, but to get to play it out with Billy and the rest of the cast is really special.”

Oil Industry Authenticity and Strong Writing

Although Elliott’s character doesn’t delve deeply into technical jargon, he symbolizes the industry’s rugged roots and blue-collar experience. Elliott reflected,

“I haven’t done much of that. I think TL was, in fact, he was a wildcatter back in the day. Maybe he was just a guy operating a rig. I don’t know. We haven’t gotten in that deep in terms of his background, other than the fact that he, in fact, was in the oil business on some level, on the working end of it back in the day.”

The series continues to be lauded for Taylor Sheridan’s writing, which provides both actors with the material to deliver compelling performances. Elliott highlighted what draws audiences in, stating,

“He’s an outdoor guy, and that spoke to me when this thing came around. When our audience responds to that kind of material in a scene is because of the story that [Taylor] is telling. It just speaks to what a great writer Taylor is. It’s such a gift to have that material and to be able to deal with Billy.”

Building Toward the Future

This season sees Tommy Norris overwhelmed by mounting problems at home and at work, fulfilling the type of challenging role that appeals to both actor and audience. Thornton reflected on this, saying,

“Yeah, well, that’s what actors dream of — if an actor doesn’t have some kind of mess to clean up, it can get old pretty quick. But yeah, I’m looking very forward to seeing what the audience feels. And like Sam was saying earlier, we’re just like the audience is, looking forward to watching this season. We’re looking forward to making Season 3 too.”

There is enthusiasm within the cast for the series’ future possibilities, as Thornton stated simply, “We all are.” – Billy Bob Thornton, Actor
