DCEU Hero Returning in James Gunn’s Superman Sequel

The James Gunn Superman sequel is set to revive excitement among DC fans as reports suggest a familiar DCEU hero will return in Man of Tomorrow, the upcoming sequel to Superman. After launching the new DC Universe with the animated Creature Commandos and following a successful theatrical run, the Superman film grossed $616.7 million at the global box office, paving the way for this next installment.

Strong Box Office Performance Spurs Franchise Plans

Forbes has reported that the Superman movie is approaching $150 million in profit worldwide, reinforcing DC’s commitment to expanding the Superman franchise. James Gunn is confirmed to return, with filming for Man of Tomorrow scheduled to begin next year, targeting a July 9, 2027 release. This film will reportedly feature Brainiac as the main antagonist, and several heroes are expected to make appearances alongside Clark Kent.

Pierce Brosnan Hints at Doctor Fate’s Return

In a recent conversation with GQ, Pierce Brosnan, who played Doctor Fate in Black Adam, shared new details about the character’s future. According to Brosnan, there are rumors that Doctor Fate may receive his own standalone project—possibly a television series or film—and also appear in the Superman sequel. Addressing these possibilities, Brosnan stated:

“I’ve heard that Dr Fate was going to have his own show, or his own movie. I’ve heard that he’s going to be in the next Superman. I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much, and I would definitely be open to it.”

What This Means for the DC Universe

The prospect of integrating Doctor Fate, previously seen in Black Adam, into Man of Tomorrow offers fans continuity from the DCEU while refreshing the roster of heroes in the evolving DC narrative. The use of a prominent villain like Brainiac hints at an ambitious storyline, and Brosnan’s openness to reprise his role suggests returning actors could lend both star power and continuity to the franchise. With profit margins high and new production on the horizon, anticipation is building for how James Gunn’s vision will shape the future of DC films.
