James Gunn Shuts Down “DC Crime” Rumor, Clarifies Project

James Gunn has responded directly to social media speculation, addressing recent confusion about a rumored DC television project, a moment that has drawn intense interest from fans following the success of the 2025 Superman film. The James Gunn DC project clarification became necessary after reports misrepresented the title of the upcoming show, prompting Gunn to correct the record regarding its development at DC Studios.

Clarification on the Jimmy Olsen Spin-off Title

The heightened attention began when online chatter picked up about a new DC series featuring Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, reportedly shining a light on the infamous Gorilla Grodd, the telepathic, hyper-intelligent ape villain. Initial rumors suggested the series would go by the name DC Crime, which led to speculation among fans and comments directed at Gunn, such as:

“Just FYI, there has never been a project titled ‘DC Crime’ in development, not even as a working title. I don’t know where that came from, but it’s weird. And no, that doesn’t mean all of the rest of the story is false.”

– James Gunn, Filmmaker

The filmmaker made it clear that no project at DC Studios has ever used the title DC Crime, even informally. This statement aimed to clear up the misunderstanding that spread after the rumor gained traction, while also acknowledging that some other reported details might be based in fact.

Despite the rumors, the official title for the Jimmy Olsen spin-off series has yet to be announced, and no release date has been shared with the public. While the full narrative of the show remains undisclosed, early reports describe it as adopting a true-crime documentary style, focusing on both Jimmy Olsen and Gorilla Grodd. American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault are attached as showrunners, with oversight from Gunn himself, Peter Safran, and Gale Vaisman during production.

Other Major Projects in Development at DC Studios

In addition to the Jimmy Olsen project, DC Studios is engaged with several other productions, both within its main timeline and through its DC Elseworlds banner. Among these is the highly anticipated sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which has recruited award-winning production designer Luke Hull, known for his work on Andor. Filming is slated to commence next year, marking another significant step for DC’s cinematic universe.

James Gunn and Matt Reeves are also teaming up as producers on the animated feature Dynamic Duo, which promises to highlight two different Robins, expanding on the legacy of the iconic character. Meanwhile, Supergirl has completed principal photography and recently held a quiet test screening attended by

“a select group of executives and a few members of Gunn’s trusted DC stable.”

The movie is projected for a 2026 release.

Further plans include another Superman-centric film, Man of Tomorrow. In this upcoming story, Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, will join Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet, as the pair teams up against Braniac. Man of Tomorrow is being planned for a 2027 premiere, underlining DC’s commitment to expanding its universe through both new and established properties.

What Fans Can Expect Next from the DC Universe

The anticipated Jimmy Olsen series will continue to be the subject of speculation until DC Studios provides more concrete details, such as an official title or release window. With names like Tony Yacenda, Dan Perrault, Peter Safran, and Gale Vaisman involved, expectations remain high about the direction and tone of this unique entry in DC’s growing lineup.

Currently, Superman, featuring David Corenswet as the titular hero and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, is available to stream on HBO Max. Set against the challenges of reconciling his Kryptonian legacy with his life on Earth, this newest portrayal of Superman affirms the studio’s dedication to truth, justice, and timeless storytelling values—even as the world evolves around these characters. The ongoing efforts by James Gunn and his team suggest continued ambition and transformation for the DC Universe, signaling significant developments for fans in the near future.
