James Gunn Shuts Down DCU Character Rumors Amid Speculation

James Gunn has publicly denied circulating James Gunn DCU character rumors involving Pierce Brosnan’s Dr. Fate joining the new DC Universe, despite recent speculation and comments from Brosnan himself. This dispute comes as DC Studios navigates its ongoing reboot of the DCEU, leaving fans questioning which familiar faces might reappear in the next phase of films and series.

Gunn Responds to Speculation About Dr. Fate’s Return

Reports emerged suggesting that Pierce Brosnan could reprise his role as Dr. Fate in the reimagined DCU, fueling debates in fan communities. However, Gunn quickly addressed the rumors on Threads, stating,

My opinion is I’ve never heard a Dr Fate rumor!

Gunn, DC Studios Co-Chair.

Brosnan portrayed Dr. Fate, a mystical Justice Society member, in the 2022 film “Black Adam” alongside Dwayne Johnson. The character sacrificed himself in the movie, seemingly bringing his journey to a close. Yet, Brosnan indicated he was open to future appearances in a recent interview, referencing both a standalone project and involvement in the upcoming “Man of Tomorrow” Superman film. Brosnan told GQ,

I’ve heard that Dr. Fate was going to have his own show, or his own movie. I’ve heard that he’s going to be in the next Superman,

Brosnan, Actor. He further shared his attachment to the character, stating,

I enjoyed that, the philosophy of that character, very much, and I would definitely be open to it.

New DCU Faces and Returning Collaborators

Beyond Brosnan, fans continue to speculate about the roles of characters and trusted collaborators in Gunn’s new DC vision. Gunn clarified that Chris Pratt, known for his work with the director in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” will not portray Batman in the DCU. However, Gunn left room for the possibility of Pratt undertaking another DCU role in the future.

Michael Rooker, another frequent Gunn collaborator, has already appeared in Superman and will feature in the second season of Peacemaker, but he could also play a different DCU character moving forward. Gunn also addressed the studio’s approach to less established DC characters, stating he is

“probably not going to do certain movies”

with unknown DC figures due to the challenges of attracting audiences to theaters.

Current Status of Old and New DCU Characters

While the DCU reboot means most DCEU storylines and characters are being reimagined, there are exceptions. Peacemaker is the sole project bridging both chapters, and hints suggest Blue Beetle’s presence is not entirely finished. Despite fan hope, the return of Brosnan’s Dr. Fate now seems unlikely.

Next on the agenda for DCU Chapter One is “Lanterns,” set to premiere on HBO in early 2026, offering a glimpse at the franchise’s direction under Gunn and DC Studios.

The Road Ahead for DC Studios

The debate surrounding James Gunn DCU character rumors, fueled by Pierce Brosnan’s comments and Gunn’s swift denials, underscores ongoing uncertainty as DC Studios reshapes its cinematic universe. With significant changes underway and only a select few characters making the transition, attention now turns to how the evolving DCU will define its future and which actors and characters will help usher it in.
