Martin Campbell, the director who brought the beloved Zorro character to life, is contemplating a thrilling third installment featuring Antonio Banderas as the famed masked hero. This comes 20 years after Banderas first donned the iconic mask in 2005’s The Legend of Zorro. Campbell hinted during a recent interview that he would be excited to direct another Zorro film, particularly if Banderas is ready to reprise his role. “Absolutely. He’s terrific,” Campbell stated, reflecting on their past collaborations.
In the original 1998 film, The Mask of Zorro, audiences were introduced to the storyline of nobleman Don Diego de la Vega, played by Anthony Hopkins, who passes the Zorro mantle to his protégé, Alejandro Murieta, portrayed by Banderas. The film followed Alejandro as he fought for justice and won the heart of the spirited senorita Elena, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. “Zorro was a servant of the people. He did what was needed,” noted Don Diego, to which Alejandro passionately replied, “Now he’s needed again.” This discussion seems more relevant than ever as Campbell discusses the prospect of a new Zorro adventure.
Campbell, whose latest project is the action thriller Cleaner, featuring Daisy Ridley, expressed eagerness to revisit the Zorro franchise. Despite the mixed reception of The Legend of Zorro, he praised Banderas, saying, “He was fantastic to work with.” He also hinted at the potential for Banderas to transition into the role previously held by Hopkins, while introducing a new Zorro to audiences. Campbell noted, “It’s a perfect circle, really, isn’t it?”
Banderas, now at the age of 64, has shown openness to the idea of passing the torch in a potential third film. When asked about taking on a mentor role, he confirmed, “Yes, I would. I would consider that possibility, why not?” He expressed willingness to guide the new hero as Hopkins once did for him, further adding intrigue to the sequel possibilities.
As for who might take on the Zorro mantle, Banderas suggested Tom Holland, his co-star from Uncharted. He remarked on Holland’s energetic and dynamic persona, stating, “He’s so energetic and fun, and he’s got this spark too.” The combination of Banderas’ legacy and a new actor could reinvigorate the franchise and introduce Zorro to a new generation of fans.
The initial Zorro film was a blockbuster success, raking in over $250 million globally. However, the sequel struggled to captivate audiences and earned around $142 million. Campbell’s illustrious career continued with another iconic character, James Bond, when he revitalized the franchise with 2006’s Casino Royale.
The new action thriller Cleaner, which premieres in theaters on February 21, features a gripping narrative where radical activists take control of an energy company’s gala, leading to hostage situations and intense moral dilemmas. The return of Antonio Banderas in a third Zorro film seems to be a thrilling possibility that fans can look forward to, embodying a legacy in cinematic history that continually evolves.
