Eva Victor’s Career Highlights at Gotham Awards

During the awards show, Eva Victor was also recognized for her work on Sorry, Baby, which competed for both Best Feature and Best Original Screenplay. Though the top prize went to One Battle After Another and Jafar Panahi was awarded for It Was Just an Accident, Victor’s film remained a notable contender.

In addition to acting, Victor wrote and directed Sorry, Baby, marking a significant directorial debut. The film features performances by Victor, Naomi Ackie, Louis Cancelmi, Kelly McCormack, Lucas Hedges, and John Carroll Lynch. Sorry, Baby tells the story of Agnes, a literature professor struggling with depression following a sexual assault, while managing the emotional effects of learning that a close friend is pregnant via sperm donor.

Inspiration and Themes in Sorry, Baby

Victor shared candidly about the origins of Sorry, Baby, reflecting on the need for emotionally supportive films that validate the experiences of trauma survivors.

“There was a time in my life when I was looking for a film about going through a trauma that held my hand while I was watching it,”

Victor revealed.

“I didn’t want the film to scare me with violent images or harsh words that shocked my system and shut me down — I wanted the film to hug me tight without shying away from the pain of it all. I needed the film to care for me, the person who’d been through the difficult thing. I didn’t need a film that existed to teach people how bad it is to go through a bad thing, I needed a film that existed to make me feel less alone.”

Victor described the project as a testament to the power of supportive, intimate friendship.

“Sorry, Baby was a love letter to the intimate friendship that can save your life when things are mind-bendingly painful.”

The film focuses on the long-term process of healing and the meaningful moments that help one overcome trauma.

“It’s a film about one person’s attempt at healing over five years, and the small moments of joy that act as rebellion in the aftermath of a trauma that feels like it’s trying to keep you lonely and outside of the world,”

Victor noted.

“So the structure became about the journey of the two friends’ relationship — the beginning a joyful reunion, the middle a pivotal moment of care that brings the two friends eternally close.”

Looking Ahead After Gotham Awards

Although reflecting on recent creative achievements, Victor remains uncertain about immediate next steps while maintaining an openness to new opportunities.

“I am seriously day by day right now. You wouldn’t even believe the way I was looking at my calendar. I was like, what time do we leave?”

Victor explained.

“Like it’s that kind of thing. That said, I look forward to resting a bit and then getting back to the page.”
