The Mayor of Kingstown season 4 finale delivered an emotional and violent conclusion as Jeremy Renner’s character, Mike McLusky, faced one of his toughest personal moments. In the final episode, viewers witnessed the aftermath of Merle Callahan’s actions, deepening the complicated narrative of the family drama with the focus keyword Jeremy Renner Mayor of Kingstown taking center stage.
The shocking culmination happened after Merle Callahan, portrayed by Richard Brake, escaped from Anchor Bay and murdered Tracy, Kyle McLusky’s wife. Following this horrifying act, Merle turned himself in at the local police station, only to be handed over to Det. Ian Ferguson who drove him to the railroad tracks, setting the stage for a confrontation with the McLusky brothers.
Kyle’s Choice and Mike’s Support Highlight Family Tragedy
According to Jeremy Renner, the decision over who would confront Merle was clear within the show’s narrative. While Renner’s protagonist Mike had strong reasons to go after Merle himself, he believed it was necessary for his on-screen brother, Kyle McLusky (Taylor Handley), to see the act through, considering Merle was responsible for killing Kyle’s wife.
That’s one way to sort of… not really protect, but help forge a path for healing because of what [Merle] did,
Renner explains. There was no other pathway.

At the tense meeting on the railroad tracks, Kyle executes Merle, firing repeatedly even after his adversary’s death, as grief and anger overtake him. Mike steps in at that moment, intervening before his brother can do any further harm, physically taking the weapon from Kyle and shielding him from self-destruction as the brothers retreat from the scene.
The beautiful end of it all is at least they [Mike and Kyle] have each other,
Renner says of the intense exchange between the siblings.
That was something I really had to fight for [at] the end of this show. It was very, very, very important to at least give the audience that. Give them something good.
Renner continues,
The beautiful part for us is the release of that toxic character and then the two brothers falling into each other — and at least they have each other through it all. So that’s some kind of hope, right?
Aftermath and Uncertain Future for the McLusky Family
Throughout the fourth season, Mike’s determination to protect Kyle remained a driving force, particularly during Kyle’s own time inside Anchor Bay. However, the unforeseen murder of Tracy shattered any sense of stability, launching Kyle down a path of vengeance and grief. The brothers, portrayed by Taylor Handley and Jeremy Renner, were left grappling with the consequences as the dust settled from Merle Callahan’s shocking death.
The emotional fallout for the McLusky family closes the season with uncertainty, leaving their future in question. With the brothers’ bond tested but not broken, fans await confirmation of a fifth season to see how both Mike and Kyle will cope with the trauma and losses they have endured. As of now, all eyes remain on Paramount+ where the season 4 finale is available for streaming, and viewers hold out hope for more of Taylor Sheridan’s gripping narrative in Mayor of Kingstown.
