Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna are now ready to showcase a significant chapter in Indian history with their upcoming film, Chhaava, scheduled to be released on February 14. This historical drama, adapted from the revered Marathi novel written by Shivaji Sawant, centers around the legacy of Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the second ruler of the Maratha kingdom. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film features notable actors including Akshaye Khanna, who portrays the formidable Aurangzeb, alongside Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, and Diana Penty in pivotal roles.
Director Laxman Utekar felt compelled to bring Sambhaji Maharaj’s story to life after discovering his inspiring narrative during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a candid interview with India Today, Utekar expressed, “Everyone knows about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, but no one knows about Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. He had such great courage and was a great warrior, but sadly no one knows about it. During the pandemic, when I read about Sambhaji Maharaj, I realised he is such a big character, and why are we not talking about his life? That’s when I started writing and the idea of Chhaava came to me.”
Sambhaji Maharaj ruled from 1681 until his execution in 1689, showcasing remarkable bravery in the face of adversity while defending his kingdom against forces like the Mughal Empire. His reign, lasting nine years, was marked by significant military confrontations, notably the attack on Burhanpur, a vital Mughal city in present-day Madhya Pradesh. This strategic move aimed to contain Aurangzeb’s ambitions in the Deccan region. Between 1682 and 1688, several fierce battles underscored the struggle for control of forts while the Mughals sought dominance over the Marathas.
Two years into his reign, Sambhaji demonstrated his resolve by executing 24 members of powerful families when he uncovered a plot to assassinate him. Yet, by 1685, the Mughals had dealt severe blows to his forces, reclaiming key strongholds. In a dramatic turn of events, Sambhaji, betrayed and captured by Aurangzeb, faced unimaginable torture before his execution on February 1, 1689. His last days remain infamous, remembered for the brutal manner in which he was executed.
Despite these harrowing experiences, Sambhaji Maharaj is celebrated for his indomitable spirit, defiance against tyranny, and unwavering commitment to his homeland.
