Anya Taylor-Joy Unveils Video Game Inspirations Behind Her Elite Sniper Character in The Gorge!

The upcoming sci-fi horror film The Gorge will feature Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy in the role of an elite sniper, whose mission is to guard the gateway to hell. Directed by Scott Derrickson, known for his previous work on Doctor Strange, this film marks his return to high-profile action after a notable hiatus. Derrickson recently shared insights about the film in an interview with GamesRadar+, where he revealed that his creative process was heavily influenced by popular horror video games such as Silent Hill and Until Dawn.

“I love those games, and I do think that gaming has sort of set the bar for gun-play action, especially if you’re really with a single character or two characters, you kind of can’t beat it,” Derrickson explained. He acknowledged the challenge of balancing engaging, high-stakes action with a compelling narrative, stating, “The challenge was to have that kind of stimulus and power and really utilize that. But then to also really keep the romance alive.”

The film showcases Taylor-Joy alongside a talented cast, including Miles Teller as Levi, Sigourney Weaver as Bartholomew, Sope Dirisu as J.D., and William Houston as Erikas. The screenplay was penned by Zach Dean, known for his work on Fast X. The collaboration between these remarkable talents aims to deliver a gripping narrative filled with suspense and intensity.

The Gorge’s official synopsis sets an intriguing premise: “Two highly-trained operatives are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.”

As Taylor-Joy continues to make her mark in the industry, she has also starred in the action prequel Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, set to release in 2024, and made a cameo in Dune: Part Two as Alia Atreides, with expectations for a larger role in the third installment, Dune: Messiah. Following her acclaimed performance in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, she is confirmed to return to television in the Apple TV+ crime drama titled Lucky, where she portrays a character struggling with her past criminal connections.

The anticipation for The Gorge is building, especially with its debut on AppleTV+ scheduled for February 14. With Anya Taylor-Joy’s exceptional talent leading the charge in this ambitious project, audiences can expect a thrilling ride that merges action with psychological depth, all while exploring the influences of video game narratives in cinema.
