Amitabh Bachchan’s Heartwarming Gesture: How He Supported Yash Johar When Karan Johar’s Career Hit Rock Bottom!

Karan Johar‘s Dharma Productions is currently thriving, but its initial journey was fraught with challenges. Recently, director Nikkhil Advani shared a poignant memory of the difficult times Dharma faced and how Amitabh Bachchan stepped in to support Yash Johar, Karan Johar’s father. During a conversation with Lehren Retro, Nikkhil recounted, “I remember Karan telling me that there was a time when he sold his lights and camera. He had mortgaged his house. Hiroo Aunty had a heart attack. I think Amitji met Yash uncle and asked him, ‘How is Hiroo?’. They were both very close as they were school friends.”

Nikkhil continued, “Yash uncle told him, ‘She is in Breach Candy hospital’. Amitji left his shoot and rushed to see her in the hospital.” This visit was pivotal, showcasing the strong bond Amitabh Bachchan and Yash Johar shared. After the visit, Amitabh offered Yash Johar much-needed encouragement, suggesting a collaboration on a film. He told Yash, “There is a boy who I am making a film with. Romesh is producing it but you call him up and tell him that Amit has given dates for your film. There is a subject on Scarface; we should do it together.”

This interaction laid the groundwork for the iconic film Agneepath, which Amitabh said he would help produce. Despite Amitabh Bachchan’s generous offer to aid Yash Johar’s company, Agneepath did not become an instant success upon its release but later achieved cult status.

Nikkhil Advani, who has collaborated with Dharma Productions on notable films like Kal Ho Naa Ho, reflected on the significance of those early struggles. Today, Dharma Productions is well-known for classics like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, and My Name Is Khan. The unwavering support of Amitabh Bachchan during a critical juncture in Karan Johar’s career remains a testament to the power of friendship and collaboration in the film industry.
