Timothée Chalamet recalled a tense encounter on the set of the film Marty Supreme, where he was threatened by an extra while shooting a scene. The incident occurred during the production of the Josh Safdie-directed movie, which follows Marty Mauser, played by Chalamet, as he strives to become the world’s best ping-pong player.
Chalamet shared details about the moment in a recent Q&A with Robert Downey Jr. at New York’s DGA Theater, revealing that his efforts to provoke an emotional reaction from a non-actor on set took an unexpected turn.
Chalamet’s Efforts to Elicit a Reaction From a Background Actor
On set, Chalamet tried repeatedly to anger one of the extras during a motel scene. He described the challenge of working with many non-professional actors, explaining,
“I won’t say who, but in that motel sequence, there are a lot of non-actors…that I find it really thrilling to work with, but sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them,”
Chalamet said.
“And I’m really getting in the guy’s face and I’m really trying to get him angry with me.”
Despite these attempts, the actor initially did not respond as hoped. Chalamet admitted to telling the director, Josh Safdie,
“He’s not getting angry with me, he’s not getting angry with me,”
as he struggled to provoke the intended reaction.
Unexpected Threat From an Extra
However, on another take, the situation changed dramatically. Chalamet recalled how the extra suddenly warned him,
“I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to f— with me. You don’t want to see me angry.”
This startled Chalamet, who laughed nervously and remarked to Safdie,
“Holy s—, who do you have me opposite, man?”
