James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has provided an update on the status of the DC Universe (DCU) Batman project, confirming that the script remains incomplete. The film, titled The Brave and the Bold, will be directed by Andy Muschietti, known for his work on It, and is set to introduce Damian Wayne as Robin. This update contradicts rumors suggesting that the script was finished and that the movie would release in 2028.
Current Progress on The Brave and the Bold
Addressing a fan on the social platform Threads, Gunn responded to speculation about the Batman movie’s timeline, stating, “Fiction, sorry. Screenplay isn’t finished.” This follows a pattern of slow communication regarding the project. In July, just before the release of Superman, Gunn had also remarked,
“I mean, we’re working on a script. We have a screenwriter who’s hammering away at it. I’m very involved, and so, you know, we’ll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don’t.”
The cautious messaging suggests that the film remains in early development stages.
Batman’s Role in the Wider DC Cinematic Landscape
While The Brave and the Bold is still in progress, a Batman sequel unrelated to the DCU will hit theaters sooner. The Batman 2, starring Robert Pattinson and directed by Matt Reeves, is scheduled for an October 1, 2027 release. This movie takes place outside the main DCU continuity under Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership. Sebastian Stan will portray Harvey Dent, Scarlett Johansson has been cast in an undisclosed role, and Colin Farrell returns as the Penguin in a limited capacity.
Upcoming DCU Projects Following Batman
After the Batman movie, the DCU plans to expand with new characters and stories. Supergirl will be the first solo film featuring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, marking a key step in the universe’s development. This will be followed by Lanterns, an HBO series focusing on the Green Lantern Corps, signaling DC Studios’ intention to build a wider, interconnected narrative across both film and television.
What This Means for Fans and the DC Universe
Gunn’s confirmation that the Batman script is unfinished reveals the cautious, deliberate pace at which DC Studios is approaching its film slate. With no firm release date yet for The Brave and the Bold, fans must wait to see how the Damian Wayne story will unfold under Muschietti’s direction. Meanwhile, the 2027 release of The Batman 2 offers a glimpse of a separate Batman narrative experienced on the big screen. The forthcoming Supergirl and Lanterns projects further illustrate DC Studios’ commitment to broadening the DCU world, promising additional depth and diversity in future storytelling.
