“After the Hunt,” a thrilling new film featuring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, and Andrew Garfield, is set to hit theaters this fall. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, the film is slated for a limited release on October 10, 2023, before expanding nationwide on October 17. This strategic release is timed for awards season, placing it alongside significant titles such as Blumhouse’s “The Black Phone 2,” which features Ethan Hawke, and Lionsgate’s “Good Fortune,” starring Aziz Ansari, Keanu Reeves, and Seth Rogen.
Described as a gripping psychological drama, the plot revolves around Julia Roberts’ character—a college professor at a pivotal juncture in her life. According to the official logline, “After a star pupil (Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Garfield), she finds herself navigating a complex moral landscape. Meanwhile, a dark secret from her past threatens to surface, complicating matters further.”
The talented cast also includes Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny. The film marks a reunion between Guadagnino, known for his Oscar-nominated work in “Call Me by Your Name,” and the production team behind some of his previous projects such as “Challengers” and “Bones and All.” Guadagnino last directed “Queer,” which explored a love story set in 1950s Mexico City.
First-time screenwriter Nora Garrett penned the script for “After the Hunt” and will be executive producing alongside Karen Lunder for Imagine Entertainment. Notable producers include Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum, with Jeb Brody and Guadagnino representing Frenesy. This film highlights Amazon MGM’s diverse 2025 theatrical slate, which also features Ben Affleck’s “The Accountant 2” and Jason Statham’s collaboration with director David Ayer in “A Working Man.”
The anticipation surrounding Julia Roberts’ performance in “After the Hunt” suggests it could be a standout entry in this year’s cinematic offerings, blending suspense and emotional depth in a way that resonates with audiences.
