Dark Winds Season 4 Honors Robert Redford with Hidden Tribute

Dark Winds Season 4 opens with a special dedication to Robert Redford, one of its executive producers, in the very first episode, setting the tone for a respectful memorial. The series continues this homage beyond the premiere, incorporating subtle acknowledgments to Redford’s legacy, including an easter egg in a later episode featuring his acclaimed film Jeremiah Johnson.

At one point in the season, when characters Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee, and Bernadette Manuelito travel to Los Angeles in 1972, viewers will spot a movie theater marquee displaying Jeremiah Johnson, linking the story to Redford’s cinematic impact. This nod connects the show’s fictional universe to Redford’s real-life contributions, deepening the tribute.

A Look Back at Robert Redford’s Cameo in Season 3

Robert Redford previously appeared in the premiere of Season 3, titled Ye’iitsoh, alongside executive producer George R.R. Martin. The two portrayed characters engaged in a chess game, observed by Joe Leaphorn, who intervenes to help Martin’s character cheat. Redford’s character then responds with a simple, “Thanks a lot.”

Zahn McClarnon, the actor portraying Leaphorn, reflected on the moment fondly. He shared,

The smile on my face all day, it was incredible.

Behind the Scenes: The Creation of the Redford-Martin Cameo

John Wirth, showrunner for Dark Winds, revealed how the cameo was conceived in an article for Variety. He and fellow showrunner Steven Paul Judd originally aimed for a collaborative scene featuring Redford and George R.R. Martin as enigmatic Men in Black-type agents tasked with

retrieving an otherworldly five-horned sheep roaming the Navajo Nation and return it to the sheep’s alien uber-bosses.

Despite intentions, scheduling conflicts in 2024 prevented the full scene from materializing; however, Wirth praised both Redford’s delivery and Martin’s performance in the scene that was filmed. Executive producer Tina Elmo also relayed how Redford had expressed interest in discussing Season 4 further after returning to Santa Fe.

Although a meeting between Redford and the showrunners never happened, Wirth described his excitement about the prospect and maintained communication with Redford regarding the episode’s final cut. He remarked,

I did communicate with Bob about the cut, made a few small changes for him, and was glad he seemed pleased with it. I know I was.
