Maddox Jolie-Pitt, son of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has officially dropped his father’s last name, now being credited as Maddox Jolie. The 24-year-old appeared under this name in the credits for his mother’s film Couture, which was released in French theaters on March 24, 2024, marking the latest change among the Jolie-Pitt children in distancing their names from their father.
Maddox, the eldest of six children shared by the former couple, is the third to make this change after his sisters Shiloh and Vivienne had previously dropped Pitt from their surnames. Shiloh was the first to file the legal name change on her 18th birthday in May 2024, followed by Vivienne, whose status remains uncertain. Maddox’s new surname was also listed during the film’s debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023.
Angelina Jolie adopted Maddox as a single mother in 2002, with Brad Pitt legally adopting him several years later. Alongside Maddox, the couple shares daughters Zahara and Shiloh, son Pax, and twins Knox and Vivienne. Jolie and Pitt’s relationship lasted around 12 years, including a marriage of two years. The actress filed for divorce in 2016, with the separation finalized in 2024.
Jolie’s attorney, James Simon, addressed the divorce and family matters, saying,
“More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family.”
He added,
“This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago. Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
This shift in surnames reflects a broader move by the children of Jolie and Pitt to establish their own identities separate from their father. As Maddox steps into a role behind the camera, his choice to use Jolie exclusively aligns with his sisters’ earlier decisions and signals a continuing chapter for the family in the public eye.
