At just 17, Christina Applegate once left Brad Pitt for Sebastian Bach, choosing the hair-metal singer over the then up-and-coming actor. The actress shared this story in her memoir, You With the Sad Eyes, recalling events that took place in 1989 during the MTV Video Music Awards when she invited Pitt to accompany her.
The MTV Awards Night That Sparked the Switch
While starring on Married… With Children, Applegate spent the night fixated on Sebastian Bach, who was leading the band Skid Row at the time. Reflecting on the decision, she wrote,
“I had spent all night staring at Bach, who was then a long-haired hunk fronting the band Skid Row,”
and added,
“I hate to put it like this, but Brad back then was still making his way as an actor, and he wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt, the man of so many people’s dreams.”
The night took a sour turn for Pitt, who ended up driving Applegate’s mother home. She revealed,
“And it gets worse: Brad was left to sullenly drive my mom… home. Apparently, at a gas station on the way, Brad almost got into a fight with a bunch of gang members, and, not surprisingly, was subsequently very mad at me.”
Regrets and Rift Between Applegate and Pitt
Applegate soon regretted leaving Pitt when she discovered Bach was already committed to a long-term relationship and had a one-year-old child. The actress recounted that Pitt did not speak to her for many years following the incident, though they eventually reconciled.
She admitted,
“Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a kid, and though he deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row,”
and humorously noted,
“Of course, Brad is now THE Brad Pitt, and Sebastian Bach… well, he still has long hair, I guess.”
Sebastian Bach Reflects on the Story
About a decade ago, Sebastian Bach acknowledged Applegate’s story, expressing amusement despite the less-than-flattering portrayal. He recounted,
“She was interviewed recently on Entertainment Tonight or something, and they asked, ‘What was the dumbest thing you ever did?’ And she goes, ‘One night I ditched Brad Pitt for this other dude.’ And that dude would be me. So there was a time on this earth when Sebastian Bach was, like, a hotter lay than Brad Pitt. Of course that’s going in the book. I’ve gotta tell somebody that!”
Current Life and Ongoing Music Career
Applegate later married rock bassist Martyn LeNoble of Porno for Pyros in 2013, and together they have a daughter named Sadie. Meanwhile, Sebastian Bach has continued his music career, recently launching a solo tour across North America that will run into early April.
