Honeywell and ESS Join Forces: Honeywell and ESS have partnered to revolutionize clean energy storage. Honeywell is a veteran.  Since 1885, when smartphones and social media were dreams, they’ve existed.  Their innovative invention led to today’s thermostats.  After decades of growth, acquisitions, and spinoffs, they’re experts in large energy-storage batteries.

The new kid on the block is ESS.  In 2011, they began making energy-storage batteries to let us use more renewable energy like solar and wind.  They use abundant Earth materials, which is good for the environment.

What are Honeywell and ESS doing?  They’re developing an iron flow battery.  Imagine a gigantic rechargeable battery with unique features.  Honeywell is using its super-smart materials and energy experts to improve this battery’s stylish design from ESS.

Start with why we need better batteries.  Solar panels and wind turbines are great because they generate electricity from the sun and wind.  The sun and wind don’t always shine or blow.  They save electricity when the sun and wind are abundant for later usage.

ESS batteries have a 12-hour energy capacity, which is cool!  This means they can power our homes and cities after dark or when the wind ceases.

ESS was awarded an “Export Achievement Certificate.” by the U.S. Department of Commerce for their revolutionary batteries.  They won a nice certificate for extending their amazing American-made energy storage technology worldwide.  Like winning the Clean Energy Olympics gold medal!

ESS is expanding its Oregon factory to create more fantastic batteries to meet demand.  They plan to make two gigawatt-hours of batteries annually.  That could power thousands of households for a while.

Honeywell Performance Materials and Technology (PMT) Chief Growth Officer Bryan Glover said, “The demand for long-duration energy storage represents a compelling market opportunity within the energy transition.” They see an opportunity to clean the environment by employing more renewable energy.

So how will they do it?  Honeywell and ESS merging superpowers.  Honeywell will employ ESS’s battery technology in their energy solutions worldwide, making clean energy easy for more consumers and businesses.  ESS receives Honeywell’s innovative battery ideas.

Not stopping there.  These two work together to improve battery technology, make it cheaper, and simplify it.

You may question, “How long do these batteries last?” ESS batteries are designed to last 25 years, but they might last longer with proper care.  If properly maintained, battery modules and pipework can last decades.  Imagine a phone that never dies!

This alliance excites Honeywell, which spent $27.5 million in ESS.  That’s costly!  Plans call for buying up to $300 million in ESS products.  Like, “We believe in clean energy, and we’re putting our money where our mouth is!”

Honeywell gives ESS exclusive rights to exploit its bright battery ideas in exchange for this support.  Like trading your excellent video game for your friend’s cool skateboard, both parties win!

ESS CEO Eric Dresselhuys said, “Today, we are creating superior technology in the critical long-duration energy storage industry.” So they’re building fantastic batteries that will help us use more clean energy, which is game-changing.

This relationship couldn’t be timelier.  Clean energy sources like solar and wind power are becoming more popular but can be unpredictable.  These improved batteries ensure we have electricity when needed, essential to cleaning and greening our world.
