Google Wallet Expands Digital ID Support in Three U.S. States

Google Wallet Expands Digital ID: Residents of Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia using Android devices now have the option to upload their digital driver’s licenses to Google Wallet for use at select U.S. airports. Google Wallet had initially introduced this feature in May 2022, with only Maryland residents supported.

However, now users in the mentioned states can add their digital IDs by capturing photos of their license or state ID’s front and back and filming a brief video of their face. Once approved, these digital IDs can be used for TSA PreCheck at specific airports.

Google is also working on extending the use of U.S. driver’s licenses and state IDs in the digital format, with more options expected in the future. While this expansion is significant, it’s important to note that having a physical driver’s license as a backup is still recommended.

Most Android phones running Android 8 or later can support this feature, provided that the device has a screen lock, Bluetooth, and Nearby Devices turned on. Foldable phones, however, currently do not support the digital ID feature.

Apple Wallet, on the other hand, already supports these digital IDs for residents of Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland. It’s worth mentioning that different states may develop their own digital ID apps, separate from Google Wallet or Apple Wallet.

Interestingly, Samsung Wallet has also announced its plans to support digital licenses and IDs, with Arizona and Iowa expected to be among the first states to enable this feature.
