Japan Largest Union Aims for 6% Wage Boost in Spring Talks

Japan Largest Union Aims: Japan’s largest industrial union, UA Zensen, has set its sights on a significant wage increase, targeting a total raise of 6%, with 4% designated for base pay hikes during the upcoming spring negotiations, according to a union official.

The annual wage negotiations officially commenced on Monday, and they are expected to conclude by January 23. Japanese blue-chip companies will then present their wage hike plans for the next year in March.

This year, Japanese companies offered their workers the most substantial wage increases in three decades. The country’s average worker wages had remained largely stagnant since the bursting of the asset bubble in the early 1990s until this year.

“We have bolstered our determination for wage hikes, with a focus on addressing the fundamental aspects of wage increases, rather than merely aiming for approximately 6%,” noted the UA Zensen official.

The union will formally establish its executive plan for wage hikes on December 6 and finalize its demands for the 2024 wage negotiations by January 23. These negotiations with major companies are expected to conclude in mid-March. It marks the second consecutive year that UA Zensen’s pay demands will surpass those of Rengo, Japan’s largest trade union confederation, which called for pay increases of 5% or more for the following year last month.
