Uber Extends an Olive Branch: In an unexpected shift, Uber announces its decision to integrate London’s iconic black cabs into its platform starting early 2024. This move marks a significant turnaround in the historically tense relationship between the ride-hailing giant and the city’s traditional taxi drivers, who, in the past, vehemently protested against Uber’s disruptive presence.
London’s black cab drivers, renowned for passing the rigorous “Knowledge” test, had previously voiced concerns about Uber’s impact on their livelihoods, leading to street protests. With this new initiative, Uber aims to mend ties by offering black cab drivers predetermined job opportunities through its platform. Notably, Uber will waive commissions for black cab drivers during the initial six months of this collaboration.
The decision comes after years of discord, including a legal challenge in 2019 that black cab drivers mounted against Uber’s London operating license. This conciliatory move reflects Uber’s acknowledgment of the iconic status of black cabs in London. Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, expressed pride in collaborating with the iconic black cabs, emphasizing their beloved status among both Londoners and visitors.
