Fresenius Medical Care: On Wednesday, dialysis company Fresenius Medical announced a data breach that stole medical records from a U.S. subsidiary’s data warehouse. A firm statement estimates 500,000 patients, former patients, guarantors, and 200 staff in several states, U.S. territories, and four countries are affected.
The breach came to light when the subsidiary, Cardiovascular Consultants Ltd, detected a security incident on September 29. Acting swiftly, Fresenius Medical Care initiated an investigation, enlisting the help of a forensic firm. The intruder, claiming to have stolen data, prompted a detailed examination that revealed specific system access, encryption of data, and subsequent theft by the unauthorized party.
Fresenius Medical Care reassured that, based on the current assessment, the incident is not expected to have a material impact on its finances and operations. However, the potential for future litigation and the consideration of reputational damage cast a shadow over the situation.
