AMD Ambitious Bid: In a strategic move, AMD (AMD.O) sets its sights on a substantial market share in the data center artificial intelligence (AI) processor domain, estimating a $45 billion opportunity this year. This forecast marks a notable uptick from AMD’s earlier projection of $30 billion in June. The chipmaker unveiled its latest MI300 lineup, featuring two AI data center chips designed to compete with Nvidia’s flagship processors.

The MI300 series introduces the MI300X, focused on generative AI applications, and a second chip tailored for supercomputers. The MI300X boasts advanced high-bandwidth memory, enhancing its performance in the realm of generative AI. During a press briefing, AMD CEO Lisa Su emphasized the company’s robust supply of AI chips for the upcoming year, valued at “well above” $2 billion. Su highlighted the considerable demand from customers, reinforcing AMD’s competitive position in the market.

As AMD forays into the AI processor landscape, the company’s executives underscore the rapid surge in demand for such chips. The data center AI chip market, according to AMD, is anticipated to reach approximately $400 billion by 2027, reflecting the substantial growth trajectory in this technology sector. Analysts note that Nvidia (NVDA.O) presently commands around 80% of the AI chip market, inclusive of custom processors developed by major players like Alphabet’s Google (GOOGL.O) and Microsoft (MSFT.O).

While Nvidia’s data center revenue for the year stands at $29.12 billion, AMD positions its MI300 series to directly compete with Nvidia’s flagship AI processors. The chipmaker also introduces an updated version of the essential software for deploying these AI chips, signaling its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements. AMD’s strategic move aligns with the escalating demand for AI solutions, positioning the company for a substantial share in the evolving data center AI processor market.
