Disney Unleashes Zootopia: Shanghai Disney Resort is gearing up to introduce its inaugural Zootopia-themed attraction, strategically capitalizing on the resurgence of travel and experiential desires in China amid the post-pandemic landscape. Zootopia, a cinematic gem released in Chinese theaters back in 2016, still stands as one of the highest-grossing animated films ever imported to the country.

This exciting development marks Disney’s premiere foray into a Zootopia-themed site and represents the eighth themed area within the expansive Shanghai Disney Resort. Since its grand opening in 2016, the resort underwent expansion in 2018, introducing a Toy Story-themed attraction. Despite a relatively gradual recovery of overall consumption in China following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions a year ago, there has been a notable resurgence in domestic travel and a heightened demand for experiential activities. Shanghai Disney Resort has been a notable beneficiary of this trend.

Joe Schott, the President and General Manager at Shanghai Disney Resort, expressed his perspective on the shifting consumer behavior, stating, “I think what you saw over the last year as people emerge from the virus is them getting out and experiencing life again.” This sentiment aligns with a broader trend where individuals are eager to reclaim a sense of normalcy and engage in leisure activities after prolonged periods of pandemic-induced restrictions.

In its recent fourth-quarter earnings report, Walt Disney highlighted a surge in attendance at its Shanghai and Hong Kong parks as a significant factor contributing to the impressive 31% growth in its Experiences division, which encompasses the theme parks. The Shanghai Disney Resort operates as a joint venture, with the majority stake held by the Chinese state-owned Shendi Group.

This move by Disney underscores the company’s strategic adaptation to evolving consumer preferences, leveraging popular intellectual properties like Zootopia to enhance the appeal of its theme park offerings.
