In an exclusive revelation, it has been confirmed that Strange Darling’s Willa Fitzgerald will star alongside Russell Crowe and Harry Lawtey in the highly anticipated Cold War thriller, Billion Dollar Spy. This thrilling espionage drama, produced by Walden Media and Weed Road, delves into the captivating true story of Adolf Tolkachev, a Soviet engineer turned vital U.S. informant. Based on David E. Hoffman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, the film promises to captivate audiences with its intense narrative rooted in real historical events.
Set during the tension-filled years of the late Cold War, the movie follows Tolkachev, portrayed by Russell Crowe, as he embarks on a perilous mission to deliver thousands of pages of top-secret Soviet intelligence to the United States. Despite facing repeated rejections from a cautious CIA, Tolkachev embodies immeasurable courage, defying the oppressive regime to assist the West. He eventually finds an ally in CIA agent Tom Lenihan, played by Harry Lawtey, whose unwavering support helps him shift the balance of power.
Fitzgerald takes on the role of Mae Lenihan, Tom’s supportive wife, bringing depth and emotion to this tense geopolitical landscape. Directed by the accomplished BAFTA Award-winner Amma Asante, who has crafted powerful films like Belle and A United Kingdom, Billion Dollar Spy is written by Oscar-winning writer Stephen Gaghan, known for his work on Traffic and Syriana, building on the original script by Ben August.
Behind the scenes, an impressive production team backs the project, including Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan, and Cher Hawrysh of Walden Media, alongside Goldsman and Greg Lessans of Weed Road Pictures. Additional support comes from Jane Hooks as Executive Producer and co-producers Ildiko Kemeny, David Minkowski, and Ferenc Szále of Pioneer Stillking Films. Hanway Films manages international sales, while CAA Media Finance handles domestic rights, with the film currently in pre-production.
Willa Fitzgerald, already recognized for her versatile performances, recently starred in Miramax’s Strange Darling and received a Critics Choice nomination for her role in Netflix’s The Fall of the House of Usher. With upcoming projects, including leading a new Netflix series, Pulse, and joining a Paramount adaptation, Fitzgerald’s acting prowess continues to garner well-deserved attention.
As Billion Dollar Spy takes shape, anticipation builds around Russell Crowe’s embodiment of a character defined by bravery and defiance.
