Jaya Bachchan Urges Rajya Sabha for Amitabh Bachchan Stamp to Honor Iconic Bollywood Films’ 50th Anniversaries

Jaya Bachchan recently called upon the Rajya Sabha to issue commemorative stamps marking the 50th anniversaries of legendary Bollywood films like Sholay and Deewaar, both featuring Amitabh Bachchan in pivotal roles. Her appeal emphasizes the cultural significance of these films and their contribution to Indian cinema.

Jaya Bachchan highlighted the importance of these stamps as a means of preserving cinematic heritage and strengthening cultural identity. In her words, “The initiative would serve as a cultural bridge between generations, highlighting the importance of preserving Indian cinematic heritage and the role of cinema in shaping our cultural identity.”

The request aims to recognize Amitabh Bachchan’s remarkable impact on Bollywood. With Sholay and Deewaar, released in 1975, Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal as the ‘angry young man’ became legendary, contributing to his enduring stardom in the industry.

Historically, the first commemorative postage stamp was released in 1971, honoring Dadasaheb Phalke, the pioneer of Indian cinema. Subsequent stamps celebrated icons like Satyajit Ray, Raj Kapoor, and Madhubala, cementing their legacies in the annals of cinematic history. The introduction of an Amitabh Bachchan stamp would continue this tradition, celebrating his contribution and the legacy of Sholay and Deewaar.

Jaya Bachchan’s advocacy for the film industry is not new. During discussions on the Union Budget 2025-26, she stressed the need for government support, urging Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to prioritize the film sector. Her words, “You have totally ignored one of the industries, the film industry, and sadly, past governments have done the same. But today, you have the opportunity to take it to the next level,” reflect a critical perspective on industry challenges and potential government action.

The proposed Amitabh Bachchan stamps aim to celebrate not just his illustrious career but also the timeless films that have shaped Bollywood’s history, potentially inspiring future generations. As these discussions progress, the stamps could serve as a tangible reminder of the artistry and cultural narratives that continue to resonate through time.
