Viola Davis Emphasizes Humility, Talks Collaboration in Acting Despite ‘Greatest of All Time’ Honors

Viola Davis is opening up about how she remains humble despite being dubbed “one of the greatest of all time.” At 59, the actress attended the premiere of her latest film G20 at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. Here, she spoke about making her co-stars feel comfortable, emphasizing the ease she fosters on set despite her iconic status.

“I’ll tell you how I deal with that: I don’t deal with that. I don’t feel like I’m the greatest of all time,” Davis shared with People Magazine, expressing her genuine humility. She insisted, “I mean, I don’t have anything to do with how people see me, but when I come on a set, I see them as peers.”

Viola Davis, one of the few to achieve EGOT status, holding an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and two Tonys, stressed the importance of learning from colleagues, irrespective of their place in the hierarchy. “I don’t feel like I’m the great Buddha, the great actress Buddha in the sky and you are all minions that have to learn from me. I learn from them and I really do believe that,” she said, shedding light on her collaborative spirit.

She elaborated that this passion for collaboration is a cornerstone of her thriving career. “I got into the business because I really believed even in that word ‘ensemble.’ So I think that’s what makes people feel comfortable with me,” Davis explained, showcasing her belief in teamwork.

Davis’ latest film, G20, premieres on Prime Video on April 10.
