In an exciting development, Briarcliff Entertainment has successfully acquired U.S. distribution rights for the drama film “The Thing With Feathers,” leading to its release scheduled for October 31, 2025. The movie, starring Oscar nominee Benedict Cumberbatch, is based on Max Porter’s acclaimed 2015 novella, “Grief Is the Thing With Feathers.” Having made a striking debut at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, it promises to offer audiences an intense cinematic experience.
Directed and written by Dylan Southern in his first narrative feature, the film showcases a unique blend of emotional depth and dark fantasy. The plot centers on a widower, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, grappling with grief after his wife’s sudden death. This emotional turmoil manifests as a crow, a haunting presence that disrupts his life as he tries to care for his two sons. The powerful narrative and visual storytelling have drawn attention, with Briarcliff Entertainment CEO Tom Ortenberg calling it “an emotional gut punch wrapped in a dark, fantastical nightmare.”
In addition to Benedict Cumberbatch’s compelling lead performance, the ensemble cast includes Richard Boxall, Henry Boxall, Eric Lampaert, Vinette Robinson, Sam Spruell, and Claire Cartwright, with David Thewlis lending his voice to the character of Crow. This stellar cast, combined with the visionary direction of Southern, is expected to deliver a memorable exploration of grief, madness, and transformation.
Produced by Andrea Cornwell for Lobo Films alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland for SunnyMarch Productions, the film involves collaboration from Film I Vast, Filmgate Films, Film4, Align, Uncommon Creative Studio, mk2 Films, and Rank and File. As anticipation builds, the movie’s impact on both audiences and industry insiders is poised to be significant, potentially redefining the genre while further cementing Benedict Cumberbatch’s status as a distinguished actor.
