Ryan Coogler reflects on Chadwick Boseman’s dedication that left Disney execs ‘freaked out’ during Black Panther filming.

Ryan Coogler recently reminisced about Chadwick Boseman’s dedication to his craft, shedding light on how the late actor’s commitment left Disney executives taken aback during the filming of Black Panther. Coogler, who directed the superhero film, shared his thoughts during an appearance on The Breakfast Club, reflecting on Boseman’s impact on him and actor Michael B. Jordan. He emphasized Boseman’s unique approach and professionalism, which he says changed the way they all worked on set.

When discussing the influence Chadwick Boseman had on him, Coogler revealed that Boseman’s death affected Michael B. Jordan deeply, more so than some might expect. Boseman, older than Coogler and Jordan, was seen as a wise figure. Coogler noted, “Chad was an old school man’s man. Me and Mike were just kids compared to him.” Tragically, Boseman’s death came in 2020, at age 43, following his battle with colon cancer. Coogler highlighted Boseman’s teaching style, which was subtle yet profound, leaving lessons through example.

Boseman’s meticulous preparation for his role as T’Challa was evident and left a lasting impression. An anecdote Coogler shared depicted Boseman maintaining his character’s African accent throughout filming, even when interacting with Disney executives, who visited the set in the second week of shooting. “Disney execs came to see us, and it was the T’Challa accent. They were freaked out,” Coogler recounted. Yet, he reassured them, understanding Boseman’s commitment, “He’s working, man. He doesn’t turn it off until we wrap.”

Boseman’s immersive method not only impressed Disney executives but also deeply influenced his co-star, Michael B. Jordan. Coogler shared his insights with Jordan, particularly while working on their later film, Sinners, which involved Jordan playing twin brothers. “Seeing Chad that up close and having to do scenes across from him,” Coogler noted, helped Jordan enhance his own performances, drawing inspiration from the dedication and depth that Boseman brought to his roles.

Ryan Coogler’s reflections remind us of Chadwick Boseman’s remarkable influence and enduring legacy in the film industry. Although Boseman is no longer with us, his commitment to his roles and the lessons he imparted continue to resonate with those he worked with, shaping their artistry and professionalism for years to come. As audiences remember the phenomenal impact of Black Panther, they are also reminded of the incomparable influence of Boseman, a figure whose life and work transcended the screen, deeply affecting those who had the privilege of encountering his greatness.
