Scarlett Johansson to Showcase Directorial Debut ‘Eleanor the Great’ at the Cannes Film Festival

Scarlett Johansson is set to unveil her directorial debut, “Eleanor the Great,” at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The highly anticipated project, part of Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, was announced by Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux and president Iris Knobloch in Paris. Johansson’s film ventures into the lives of a 90-year-old Floridian woman and a 19-year-old student in New York City, featuring a cast that includes June Squibb, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Hecht, and Erin Kellyman.

Johansson, renowned for her roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, shifts her focus behind the camera, capturing attention alongside fellow debut director Harris Dickinson. Dickinson presents his film “Urchin,” exploring the journey of a drifter portrayed by Frank Dillane on London’s streets. Despite his directing debut, Dickinson continues acting, slated to portray John Lennon in Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopic, expected in 2028.

Amidst Johansson’s debut, the Cannes festival lineup promises an array of auteur-driven films. Kelly Reichardt’s “The Mastermind,” featuring Josh O’Connor and John Magaro, delves into an art-heist during the Vietnam War. Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier returns since 2021 with “Sentimental Value,” starring Renate Reinsve. Iranian director Jafar Panahi adds to the high-profile lineup with “A Simple Accident.”

This year’s festival, noted for screening an all-time record of 2,909 features, showcases premieres such as Wes Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” featuring Benicio del Toro and others, Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague,” and Ari Aster’s “Eddington,” starring notable actors like Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone.

The introduction of Scarlett Johansson as a director adds a new dimension to her illustrious acting career, sparking curiosity about her narrative style and vision. “Eleanor the Great” at Cannes signifies not just her growth as a filmmaker but also enhances the festival’s tradition of highlighting diverse talents. As the festival progresses, audience anticipation grows, eager to witness how Johansson’s storytelling will resonate with viewers and critics alike, potentially paving the way for further directorial pursuits in her career.
