Harrison Ford’s Marvel Cinematic Universe Debut: Laughs and Hulkouts in Behind-the-Scenes Gag Reel

The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment, Captain America: Brave New World, has unleashed more than blockbuster action; it has introduced the legendary Harrison Ford in a new role that instantly captivated audiences. Ford, stepping into the shoes of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross—a role previously held by the late William Hurt—has added a fresh dynamic to the MCU narrative. As the newly-minted U.S. President Ross, Ford also embraces his more vibrant alter ego, transforming seamlessly into the Red Hulk. The excitement surrounding his involvement is amplified by the release of an amusing behind-the-scenes gag reel highlighting Ford’s lighter side.

The reel, shared by ET, is a testament to the camaraderie and dedication shared by the entire cast, including stars like Anthony Mackie and Danny Ramirez, who brought the thrills of the MCU to the cinematic realm. Most notably, Harrison Ford shines as he immerses himself in the Marvel universe, dancing energetically and hulked out in fits of comedic rage. In a playful nod to his Star Wars roots, Ford humorously quips, “You can type this sh*t, but you can’t say it,” a remark reminiscing his time with George Lucas.

Directed by Julius Onah and scripted by Rob Edwards along with writing teams Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, Onah, and Peter Glanz, Captain America: Brave New World opened in February. The film, headlined by Anthony Mackie reprising his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, follows Sam’s journey to honoring Steve Rogers’ legacy, ensnared in a conspiracy involving President Ross. Ford’s debut in such an influential franchise was met with surprise and intrigue.

However, despite the laughter and anticipation, the film received mixed reviews, appreciated by some for the strong performances of Mackie and Ford, while others critiqued it for being formulaic compared to past entries, such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It presently holds a 48% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences have responded more favorably, awarding it a 79% score.

For Ford, his unexpected venture into the Marvel universe has opened the door to exciting opportunities. Expressing his enthusiasm, Ford remarked on the tremendous experience of joining the franchise and hinted at a potential return, saying, “I hope he can come back. I hope [there’s] a story in which he can develop into something other than the Red Hulk. I was very happy with the opportunity to play in this playground.” His comments underline the possibility of further storytelling that would see his character evolve beyond his formidable Red Hulk form.

The inclusion of Ford in the MCU not only expands the franchise’s vast repertoire but also bridges generational audiences through his iconic presence. The significance of his debut, despite the film’s varied reception, sets an energizing precedent for future Marvel narratives. While the intricacies of his character’s development lie beyond his current involvement, Ford’s addition offers a burst of vitality and an opportunity for unfolding creative avenues in the superhero saga. Fans await with anticipation the possibilities that Harrison Ford’s continued involvement in the MCU could herald, knowing his legendary status will undoubtedly enrich the epic tapestry of Marvel storytelling.
