Vanessa Kirby Revamps Invisible Woman for a Modern Era in New ‘Fantastic Four’ Movie

Anticipation surrounds the release of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” as stars Joseph Quinn and Vanessa Kirby breathe new life into their iconic characters. Ahead of the film’s premiere on July 25, Kirby has spoken about the revamped portrayal of the Invisible Woman, aiming to resonate with contemporary audiences. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, she shared her insights on the transformation of her character, emphasizing a departure from outdated stereotypes.

“If you played an exact ’60s Sue today, everyone would think she was a bit of a doormat,” Kirby remarked, illustrating her intent to modernize the Invisible Woman. She delved into the challenge of preserving the essence of the character while adapting to differing gender politics across generations. Kirby’s portrayal promises to capture a more empowering role for the character, making her relatable and inspiring for today’s viewers.

Joseph Quinn also detailed his approach to redefining Johnny Storm. Engaging with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, Quinn explored a version of Johnny that aligns with current cultural sensibilities. This new take moves away from the character’s historical “womanizing, devil-may-care” persona, shifting to a relatable figure who demonstrates greater empathy.

Matt Shakman, the director, shared his vision for the film, which sets itself apart by exploring a retro-futuristic 1960s on an alternative Earth. Known for his work on “WandaVision,” Shakman ensures “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” stands as a distinctive entry within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The setting allows the family to operate in a world unburdened by familiar MCU heroes, offering a fresh narrative focused on the Space Race, JFK’s era, and the optimism of the time.

“We are our own universe, which is wonderful and liberating,” Shakman explained. “There’s really no other superheroes or Easter eggs. They’re it in this universe. I love the interconnected Marvel Universe, but we get to do something so new and so different.” He envisions the team as famous astronauts and explorers, rather than just superheroes—a concept that redefines their public persona.

The film endeavors to showcase the Four as national icons due to their adventurous spirit and achievements in space exploration, marking them as pillars of inspiration for audiences. Vanessa Kirby’s portrayal of the Invisible Woman stands at the forefront of this narrative shift, offering a character that balances power and nuance, appealing to a generation seeking depth and authenticity in their heroes.
