Nawazuddin Siddiqui reveals training Ranveer Singh for Bollywood debut: “I was the go-to acting coach”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui, widely celebrated for his dynamic performances in Indian cinema, has revealed that he played a pivotal role in Ranveer Singh’s journey to the silver screen, specifically as an acting coach during Ranveer’s preparations for his Bollywood debut in Band Baaja Baaraat in 2010. In a candid recent interview, Nawazuddin Siddiqui shared that before gaining widespread recognition from Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012, he was often sought out by aspiring actors who wished to launch their film careers, stating,

“For some time, yes, I had trained him. I had become a guy who would take workshops often. If someone wanted to become an actor and get launched, I was the go-to person.”

During this formative period, Nawazuddin Siddiqui conducted numerous acting workshops, guiding a generation of hopeful actors through his unique approach to the craft. He offered practical techniques, encouragement, and constructive feedback, drawing on his extensive personal experience. However, when asked about his influence on Ranveer Singh’s later success, Nawazuddin Siddiqui humbly clarified that acting is ultimately a talent that must come from within, not something that can simply be taught or transferred, saying,

“Acting cannot be taught like a magic potion.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui went on to explain that while mentors can illuminate different methods and approaches, the journey toward true performance mastery is singular, deeply personal, and requires self-discovery. He emphasized that Ranveer Singh’s achievements are a testament to his own talent and commitment, reinforcing the idea that guidance is valuable, but individual drive is irreplaceable for lasting success in the film industry.

Currently, Nawazuddin Siddiqui continues to demonstrate his versatility, starring in the film Costao, in which he takes on the role of Costao Fernandes, a dedicated Goa-based customs officer. His commitment to both acting and mentoring signals the breadth of his influence on Indian cinema, while his honest perspective on Ranveer Singh’s debut offers rare insight into Bollywood’s behind-the-scenes culture.

The revelation of Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s mentorship highlights a significant moment in both actors’ careers and points to the enduring importance of shared knowledge in the film industry. As Ranveer Singh advances in his career with projects like the upcoming spy thriller Dhurandhar, the foundational role Nawazuddin Siddiqui played in his debut continues to resonate, suggesting that early guidance, coupled with innate passion, can shape the future of emerging talent in Bollywood.
