Alec Baldwin is facing ongoing health challenges following the tragic incident on the set of Rust, according to his wife, Hilaria Baldwin. The well-known actor, who was involved in the accidental shooting that took the life of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in New Mexico, has experienced a significant decline in health since the tragedy. Hilaria recently revealed that after the incident, Alec spent about a week hospitalized and needed assistance to walk, highlighting how deeply the event impacted him both physically and emotionally.
In an interview, Hilaria Baldwin admitted to intentionally hiding her husband’s true health struggle during this distressing period.
“He was in the hospital for, I don’t know, I think a week,”
she explained, describing how she disguised his medical condition by putting a boot on his leg, pretending he had suffered an unrelated injury.
“I put a boot on his leg to pretend that he had hurt his leg, because I didn’t want people to say that he was—”
Hilaria Baldwin felt that public scrutiny might misinterpret Alec’s condition, worrying that people could accuse him of faking illness for sympathy.
She added,
“The whole fake thing. It’s just so stupid. I can’t handle when people question what’s real, because that’s gaslighting, you know. And so we just pretended that it was something else.”
According to Hilaria, Alec Baldwin is someone who deeply cares about others, a trait that made the aftermath of the Rust tragedy even more challenging for him.
“One of the hard things for people who care a lot is they feel everything,”
she said, capturing the emotional toll the incident took on her husband.
The on-set death of 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins, when Alec Baldwin’s prop gun accidentally discharged, became a flashpoint for legal battles and public outrage. Alec Baldwin, who maintained he did not discharge the weapon intentionally, and other producers faced a wrongful death lawsuit, which was resolved in 2022. Although he was criminally charged with involuntary manslaughter, those charges were later dismissed in 2024.
After legal proceedings, Alec Baldwin returned to complete the film, which was eventually released theatrically in May 2023. However, the strain proved overwhelming. Hilaria described how the relentless pressure and public scrutiny led her husband’s health to seriously decline.
“With the pressure and the stress and everything that was happening, on top of how just awful this tragedy was and is, he just started turning off, stopped eating,”
she recalled. The stress resulted in emergency hospital visits, and at one point, Alec Baldwin fainted while with Hilaria on the streets of New York.
These intense health battles have forced Alec Baldwin to reconsider his career. Hilaria revealed that he has thought about leaving the entertainment industry.
“The negativity can be so loud, and if you let that cloud the fact that there’s so much positivity, then it can feel all-consuming,”
she observed, expressing concern for her husband’s well-being as he copes with public judgment and the weight of recent events.
Despite the turbulent emotions surrounding Alec Baldwin’s situation, Hilaria remains hopeful for the future. She acknowledged Alec’s profound love for acting and his longtime dedication to the craft, while recognizing that his passion has been deeply challenged by the recent trauma. Together since 2012, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin have seven children, forming a close family unit as they navigate the repercussions of the Rust tragedy and Alec’s ongoing health decline.
The events surrounding Alec Baldwin serve as a stark reminder of how deeply a single moment can impact lives, not only through legal proceedings and public attention, but also through private struggles with health and emotional resilience. As Alec Baldwin weighs potential changes to his career and personal life, the effects of the tragedy continue to shape the path ahead for one of Hollywood’s most recognizable figures.
