Zachary Levi discusses Shazam future in DC Universe, sharing his candid perspective on whether he may appear as the beloved hero again, following mixed outcomes for the film franchise. The actor recently addressed growing uncertainty about his involvement with DC’s evolving lineup, leaving fans with questions about Shazam’s place in upcoming stories.
Levi Reflects on Possible Return for Shazam
Zachary Levi, who became widely recognized for his debut as Shazam in 2019’s successful DC Extended Universe installment, spoke openly about his willingness to reprise the superhero role if given another opportunity. In an interview with Variety, Levi confirmed he would be open to a solo Shazam movie within James Gunn’s new vision for DC, remarking,
“Absolutely. I loved playing the role.”
Despite his interest, Levi also admitted that the direction for Shazam in the new DC Universe remains uncertain, clarifying that these decisions are
“all well above my pay grade.”
Challenges Facing Shazam’s Future in James Gunn’s DC Universe
The future of Shazam appears unclear, especially in light of DC Studios’ current approach under James Gunn. The 2023 sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, received poor reviews from critics and struggled at the box office, which has further complicated the franchise’s future prospects. James Gunn has indicated that most major cast members from the DC Extended Universe, referred to as the DCEU, are unlikely to return as the same characters in his new shared universe. Notably, Jason Momoa, who portrayed Aquaman in the DCEU, is expected to shift roles and portray the character Lobo in the new DC Universe, starting with Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
No Official Plans for a New Shazam Project
As of now, DC Studios has not introduced any fresh Shazam project for the upcoming DC Universe. This lack of announcement aligns with the broader uncertainty regarding the future of other high-profile DCEU characters. For example, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman remains in a similar position, with James Gunn dropping hints that development is underway for a new Wonder Woman project. However, Gunn has stated that details about it are
“not ready to be shared publicly yet.”
Both Shazam! and its sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, are currently accessible on the Max streaming platform. Meanwhile, the launch of the first film in the new DC Universe, titled Superman, is set for theaters on July 11, 2025.
