Vicky Kaushal unveils rare BTS of Chhaava, transforms into Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj for epic role

Vicky Kaushal has offered fans a first look behind the making of Chhaava, as he steps into the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, sharing exclusive moments on director Laxman Utekar’s birthday. This glimpse not only highlights Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in Chhaava but also showcases the dedication and scale behind this historic film.

Vicky Kaushal’s Birthday Tribute Reveals Dedication to Role

On June 1, Vicky Kaushal shared unseen behind-the-scenes photographs from the set of Chhaava to celebrate Laxman Utekar’s birthday. His message featured heartfelt gratitude, as he wrote,

Happy Birthday to the man who made me Raaje!

—Vicky Kaushal, Actor.
Kaushal’s transformation into Raaje, portraying Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj—the legendary son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj—marks a striking departure from his former onscreen persona in Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, his previous project with Utekar.

Uniting for a Grand Historical Epic

While the pair’s last collaboration was a romantic comedy in 2023, their latest film shifts dramatically to the historical Maratha backdrop. Chhaava, slated for a February 2025 release, has been described as an ambitious production with grand sets and hundreds of extras, requiring intense effort from the entire team to recreate the era authentically.

Director Recalls Impactful Moments on Set

Reflecting on the process, director Laxman Utekar emphasized Vicky Kaushal’s formidable screen presence during filming. He recalled,

There were 1500 people on our sets. Even when there was some chaos, as Raaje (Vicky) got out of his vanity, it felt like a lion was coming. When we saw him in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s outfit, holding that sword, everyone stood to attention. No one had the courage to say anything to him since he was Raaje to us and still is.

The set reportedly buzzed with anticipation and discipline whenever Kaushal emerged as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, underlining the respect he commanded in the role.

Teamwork and Calm Under Pressure

Vicky Kaushal acknowledged the demanding atmosphere on set but praised Laxman Utekar’s unfaltering composure throughout the 100-day shoot. He remarked,

A lot happens on the sets. I said to myself, ‘Now, sir will lose his cool and say, what on earth is going on’. We shot for about 100 days. Not even once I saw him lose his temper.

—Vicky Kaushal, Actor.
Kaushal further commented on how Utekar’s approach inspired unity and resilience within the cast and crew, adding,

He has been so committed to making the film right that anytime an issue arises, he will say, ‘We will try to find a solution together.’ That calmness, composure, and affection made everyone passionately invested in the film. I don’t know how he manages it, but he does.

What’s Next for Vicky Kaushal

Following the completion of Chhaava, Vicky Kaushal is set to feature in filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated project Love & War, which stars Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor alongside him.

With Vicky Kaushal fully embracing the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Laxman Utekar leading the team with calm precision, Chhaava stands as a significant upcoming addition to Indian historical cinema. As anticipation builds for its release, audiences await the powerful storytelling and performances promised by the collaboration of these industry talents.
