Alan Tudyk directs and stars in Resident Alien season 4, taking on his toughest role yet

Alan Tudyk directing and starring in Resident Alien season 4 marks his most ambitious challenge to date, as he returns to the Syfy series both in front of and behind the camera this June. With the fourth season launching on Syfy and USA at 11 p.m. ET on June 6, Tudyk’s new role as director, alongside reprising his character Harry Vanderspeigle, adds a new layer to his acclaimed career in film and television.

Alan Tudyk’s Wide-Reaching Career from Firefly to Resident Alien

Alan Tudyk has built a diverse portfolio in the entertainment world, often lending his voice to iconic characters and popping up in surprising roles. His breakout as a lead came with Firefly and its movie spin-off Serenity, and since then, he has excelled in voice acting, such as returning as K-2SO in Andor and bringing to life another robot in The Electric State with Millie Bobby Brown. Tudyk’s talents will soon be featured in James Gunn’s Superman, extending his history of contributing to DC Comics adaptations like Harley Quinn, Creature Commandos, and Young Justice.

Disney films have also benefited from Tudyk’s talents, with memorable performances as Moana’s pet rooster Heihei and King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph. Despite his history with vocal performances, Resident Alien has kept Tudyk in the spotlight in a live-action role since 2021, showing fans his range extends beyond animation and science fiction blockbusters.

A Unique Role in Resident Alien Season 4—and New Responsibilities

Returning as Harry Vanderspeigle in the town of Patience, Colorado, Alan Tudyk once again plays the central alien character masquerading as a human doctor. His character arc involves choosing humanity over his species’ invasion—a pivotal moment that feeds into the heart of the Syfy series, brimming with eccentric characters and their intertwining personal stories amid alien threats.

As Resident Alien season 4 begins, Harry faces his harshest ordeal to date: he’s imprisoned on a gray-alien moon base while a shape-shifting, praying-mantis-like alien—also portrayed by Tudyk with Clancy Brown providing the voice—replaces him back on Earth. In an added twist, Tudyk steps behind the camera for the first two episodes, fulfilling a conversation he’d had with series creator Chris Sheridan since the previous season.

However, Tudyk found that balancing his dual responsibilities would prove to be extremely demanding for both himself and the rest of the cast. Reflecting on the process, Tudyk remarked humorously,

“[Chris and I] still haven’t healed,”

“Our relationship is still in shambles, in tatters.”

Directing and Acting: The Challenges and Behind-the-Scenes Teamwork

Filming logistics added another level of complexity, as Resident Alien shoots two episodes simultaneously, forcing Tudyk to direct dual storylines in rapid succession. Tudyk described being entrusted with this responsibility as a generous gesture and explained,

“It was a very generous thing, to let me take the reins for a short time,”

—Alan Tudyk, Actor/Director. He continued,

“The cast was so nice to me. I saw moments — I’d be giving them some direction, and I’d see the look of an actor going, ‘OK, I’ll humor you. I think I understand what you’re saying at this moment. Let me just give you what I know you want.’ They know their characters well enough.”

Co-star Elizabeth Bowen found his directing style supportive and inspiring, sharing her enthusiasm before filming began,

“I told him before we started, I love notes like ‘Have you tried this thing?’ I won’t be sensitive about it,”

—Elizabeth Bowen, Actor. She added,

“I was very excited to play.”

Directing while simultaneously playing the leading role created unique hurdles, a reality Tudyk acknowledged when he shared,

“I don’t recommend it. I mean I’ll do it again, but when you’re acting and directing simultaneously, there are moments when you’re watching your fellow actors as a director when you should just be acting. You have to train your brain not to think about the result.”

—Alan Tudyk, Actor/Director. Even with previous experience writing, directing, and starring in his web series Con Man, the complexity of managing a large-scale show like Resident Alien was eye-opening for Tudyk.

Supporting Cast and Crew: Collaborative Efforts on Set

Corey Reynolds, another key cast member, noted the remarkable feats Tudyk accomplished while juggling such a challenging role on the project, stating,

“When you add in all of the factors that had to come into play in those first two episodes, where he’s not only directing, but starring in the episodes, playing an alien pretending to be [a different] alien pretending to be a human — I thought he did a great job,”

—Corey Reynolds, Actor.

Tudyk’s appreciation for the crew grew as he stepped into the director’s role, interacting with fellow artists, longtime crew members, and craftspeople who have kept the show running smoothly over multiple seasons. He described the experience by saying,

“It’s exciting to work with so many different artists that have been working on this show for so long that I don’t get to communicate with typically because I’m just off in my world acting,”

—Alan Tudyk, Actor/Director. Tudyk also shared his gratitude,

“Just watching everybody put this together and see how much they care about their jobs and how much it means to them was a gift.”

What’s Ahead for Resident Alien and Its Energetic Star

The launch of Resident Alien season 4 solidifies Alan Tudyk’s standing as a fearless artist continually expanding his range. Returning to Patience, Colorado, Tudyk delivers a new layer to Harry’s story, while steering the creative process as director enables him to deepen his ties with the ensemble and crew.

Fans of Tudyk’s previous roles—from Andor, Harley Quinn, and Wreck-It Ralph, to his sci-fi roots in Firefly and Serenity—have the opportunity to witness his multi-faceted talents in this new season. The show’s next chapter reinforces Syfy’s place as a leader in science fiction, while introducing fresh intrigue for longtime viewers and newcomers alike, with future episodes airing on Peacock a week after their premiere.
