Reese Witherspoon Admits She Lost a Friend Over Awkward Awards Speech: ‘I’m Still Embarrassed’

Reese Witherspoon revealed in a recent interview with People magazine that she burned a bridge with a fellow actor friend after she roasted her at an awards ceremony. The actor no longer speaks to Witherspoon. The “Walk the Line” Oscar winner did not reveal the actor’s name, but she did admit that the whole situation “haunts me, it literally haunts me.”

“So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress,” Witherspoon recalled. “She asked me to give her an award, but I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her.”

Witherspoon further explained, “But that was not the tone. The tone was British, elegant, classy, and I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?’ I’m still embarrassed about it. [We’re] not friends anymore. I’m not even kidding — we’re not friends anymore! I think she doesn’t like me anymore. I thought it was so funny, and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad. Not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well.”

This emotional admission highlights the intense fallout from a moment meant to entertain, which instead led to personal conflict. Witherspoon made the revelation during an interview alongside Will Ferrell, with whom she stars in the new Amazon Prime Video romantic comedy “You’re Cordially Invited.”

The film, directed by Nicholas Stoller, features Witherspoon as a sister of the bride who discovers their wedding venue has been double-booked. The other party includes Ferrell as the father of a young bride-to-be. Together, they go head-to-head to be the last wedding party standing. The cast also includes Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, and many others.

The controversy surrounding Witherspoon’s awards speech serves as a potent reminder of the fragile nature of friendships within the entertainment industry. As she grapples with the aftermath of her words, it raises questions about the long-lasting impact of public interactions and the weight that humor can carry, especially in formal settings. Moving forward, it remains to be seen whether Witherspoon can mend this bridge or if the damage is irreparable.
