R. Madhavan Defends Controversial Scene in ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’: ‘It Reflected the Times, Not Malice!’

In a recent interview with Mashable India’s The Bombay Journey, actor R. Madhavan addressed the ongoing debate surrounding a controversial scene from his 2001 romantic comedy, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (RHTDM), where his character engages in behavior today labeled as stalking. As the film continues to gain a cult following, it has faced increasing scrutiny for its portrayal of romance, particularly a sequence where Madhavan’s character follows the female lead, played by Dia Mirza, in his quest to win her affection. Madhavan, in his defense, emphasizes the cultural context of the era in which the film was produced.

Madhavan posed a rhetorical question regarding dating norms from that time, stating, “In that era in Mumbai, if one wanted to meet a girl, who he genuinely loved, wanted to respectfully meet her and respectfully contact her, how is he supposed to approach her? Yeh jo bol rahe hain naa problematic, yeh uss generation ke hain hi nahi jinko pata hi nahi ki agar aap kisi ladki ko pasand karne lagte ho, aur agar aapke mann mein koi khot nahi hai, toh kaise karo?” He added that his character was simply “a very straightforward aashiq.” This reflection draws attention to how perspectives on romance and courtship have evolved over time.

The character, though criticized for his actions, is painted by Madhavan as one with pure intentions, attempting to express his feelings in a manner that was socially acceptable at the time. Despite this defense, many viewers are left questioning the messaging conveyed through such narratives. A Twitter user expressed her discomfort, stating, “Being stalked is sooo CREEPY!!! Idk how females just sit & worry about the next female’s life so much, to the point where you sit & watch EVERYTHINGGGGG they do. Quite concerning.” Another echoed these sentiments, observing, “Watching RHTDM again in a watch party with friends & it’s crazy how Bollywood made teenage girls think that Maddy was a true ‘lover’.”

Madhavan acknowledged the criticism, arguing that RHTDM is being unfairly judged through contemporary moral standards. “Main bilkul sehmat hi nahi hun in sab cheezon se,” he asserted, dismissing the concerns regarding stalking and toxic relationships, adding, “You know, ek woh green flag, blue flag, woh sab jo cheezein hain, yeh nikamme logo ka nikamma kaam hai.” He continued to highlight cultural differences, asserting that measuring Indian courtship through a Western lens could lead to misunderstanding. “Humein humesha bachpan se sikhaya jaata tha ki ladies ke saath kaise baat kiya jaaye,” Madhavan said, emphasizing the importance of gentlemanly behaviour in their culture.

Critics specifically pointed to the scene in question, suggesting it romanticizes stalking. Still, Madhavan maintains that the actions were not intended to be harmful but were reflective of the social norms at the time, clarifying, “If you are trying to meet a girl and you miss her, what would you do? You would go to the place where you think she might be. That’s how it was.” His remarks have catalyzed a broader discussion about how romance was portrayed in early 2000’s cinema compared to today.

Despite the controversy, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein holds a special place in the hearts of many, celebrated for its memorable music, engaging performances, and nostalgia for the Bollywood romantic dramas of that era. Besides Madhavan and Dia Mirza, the film also starred Saif Ali Khan and others, contributing to its lasting appeal. Madhavan’s recent comments have reignited conversations about evolving social norms, helping audiences understand that film contexts differ vastly from current societal standards.
