Adrien Brody’s AI-Enhanced Role in The Brutalist Helps Film Achieve Major Box Office Success—Here’s the Shocking News!

The controversial Best Picture nominee, The Brutalist, has surpassed a significant box office milestone with Adrien Brody starring as architect László Tóth, a Holocaust survivor who emigrates to the United States to start anew. The film has generated discussions due to the use of AI technology to augment the faux Hungarian accents of Brody and co-star Felicity Jones. This technology, while innovative, has sparked controversy because of its environmental impact and implications regarding the role of human artists in the creative process.

As reported by Deadline, The Brutalist is projected to conclude its seventh weekend at the domestic box office with a 3-day haul of $1.6 million, landing it at No. 10 on the chart. This achievement brings its cumulative domestic total to an impressive $11.8 million, indicating the film crossed the $11 million threshold shortly after surpassing the $10 million mark earlier in the week. Notably, it has become the 13th film to cross that milestone in North America in 2025.

Among the few 2024 releases to reach this milestone, The Brutalist joins a select group that includes Mufasa: The Lion King, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Moana 2, Wicked, Nosferatu, A Complete Unknown, and Babygirl, predominantly consisting of blockbuster titles. The film’s steady performance at the box office coincides with its expansion into more theaters during awards season, a period during which Brody, director Brady Corbet, and the film itself have received numerous accolades.

Corbet’s previous star-led endeavor, Vox Lux, starring Natalie Portman, only managed to secure $727,119 at the domestic box office. Despite its low earnings, Vox Lux earned a 2025 Best Picture nomination, highlighting the complexities surrounding box office success and award nominations. As of now, the domestic box office earnings of The Brutalist stand as follows: Wicked at $469.9 million, Dune: Part Two at $282.1 million, A Complete Unknown at $66.7 million, Conclave with $31.9 million, The Substance at $17.1 million, Anora at $15.1 million, The Brutalist at $11.8 million, Nickel Boys at $1.7 million, I’m Still Here at $515,364, and Emilia Pérez with no recorded earnings.

While The Brutalist has been increasingly competitive, performing extraordinarily well at the level of a limited release, the rollout strategy has played in its favor. The film premiered in just four theaters, a number that gradually increased from four to seven, then to eight, and now to more than 1,118 theaters. This calculated rollout allows the film to compete more effectively against predominantly wide-release competitors, needing only to surpass Anora, which opened in limited release two months earlier, to claim the title of the highest-grossing limited release nominee.

Though box office performance does not guarantee a film’s chances at winning Best Picture, the impressive commercial success of The Brutalist could positively impact its prospects, especially amid the overwhelmingly positive reviews that have earned it a Certified Fresh score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Dropping the AI controversy into the mix, the film has seen a harmonious blend of critical and commercial success along with its previous awards achievements, including three Golden Globe wins and a total of 10 Oscar nominations, solidifying its position as a frontrunner.

As audiences reflect on Adrien Brody’s AI-augmented performance in The Brutalist, the film continues to resonate with viewers, making its journey in the industry an interesting narrative to follow. Fans and critics alike will be keen to see how the film performs in the coming weeks as awards season progresses and whether this immersive cinematic experience can translate into triumph at the Oscars.
