Shahid Kapoor‘s film “Deva,” which released in theaters last week after a delay, is currently approaching the ₹25 crore mark at the box office, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. While the film’s overall reception has been lukewarm, Shahid’s performance as a cop has garnered praise, contributing to its steady performance during its first week.
According to a report from Sacnilk.com, “Deva” has grossed ₹24.25 crore nett within five days of its release. However, the film experienced a drop in earnings on Tuesday, bringing in ₹2.35 crore, which marks its lowest single-day collection so far. The film’s opening was decent at ₹5.5 crore, and it saw collections of ₹6.4 crore and ₹7.25 crore on its second and third days, respectively. The Hindi occupancy on Tuesday stood at 6.93 percent.
Directed by Rosshan Andrrews, “Deva” is a remake of the 2013 Malayalam film “Mumbai Police,” which featured Prithviraj Sukumaran. Shahid plays the role of ACP Dev Ambre, a character who struggles with memory loss while investigating the murder of his best friend. Co-stars include Pooja as his love interest, a reporter named Diya Sathaye, with Pavail Gulati and Kubbra Sait in significant roles.
A review from Hindustan Times highlighted some weaknesses in the film, stating, “What Deva needed is more action perhaps? And less of the layers. If the treatment is massy, with some truly standout moments, why burden the story?” The critique suggests that despite having strong potential, “Deva” ultimately falls short due to a predictable storyline and underdeveloped arcs, although the title track has received some positive mentions.
The current box office performance of “Deva” raises questions about its sustainability in the coming weeks, especially with varying audience reactions and competition from other films. This development emphasizes the unpredictable nature of box office dynamics and leaves fans eager to see how the film’s journey unfolds in light of its mixed reception.
