Mark Strong is the latest addition to the Apple TV+ series adaptation of “Neuromancer,” Variety has learned. Strong will appear alongside previously announced leads Callum Turner and Briana Middleton in the show, which is based on the William Gibson novel of the same name. The series was picked up by Apple in February 2024.
Per the official logline, the show follows “a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case (Turner) who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high-stakes crime with his partner Molly (Middleton), a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.” Strong is set to play Armitage in the series, adding depth to a project that promises to be a thrilling adaptation.
Strong’s recent TV credits include the series “Dune: Prophecy” and “The Penguin” for Max and HBO, respectively. He has also starred in productions like “Temple,” “Low Winter Sun,” and “Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.” Known predominantly for his film roles, Strong’s filmography features the “Kingsman” franchise, “Tár,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” and “1917.” He is represented by Markham Froggatt and Irwin and WME.
The “Neuromancer” series hails from co-creators Graham Roland and JD Dillard. Roland will serve as showrunner, while Dillard directs the pilot. Both are executive producers along with Gibson; David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Matt Thunell for Skydance Television; Anonymous Content; Drake, Adel “Future” Nur, and Jason Shrier for DreamCrew Entertainment; as well as Zack Hayden. Skydance Television will co-produce in partnership with Anonymous Content and Apple Studios.
“Neuromancer” is notable as Gibson’s debut novel, which played a pivotal role in birthing the cyberpunk genre. Initially published in 1984, it garnered a Hugo Award, a Nebula Award, and the Philip K. Dick Award. The book’s impact led Gibson to publish two follow-ups, “Count Zero” and “Mona Lisa Overdrive.” Although numerous attempts have been made to adapt the book into a film, none have successfully moved forward until now.
