Ethan Hawke Rethinks Classic Western: The Gunfighter Remake in the Works at 20th Century Studios!

In an exciting development, Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke is set to co-write a reimagining of the classic 1950 Western film The Gunfighter for 20th Century Studios. Sources confirm that Hawke will team up with his writing partner Shelby Gaines to pen the script. Although there are hopes that he might also direct the film, at this stage, he has only secured a deal for writing and producing, with the project still in its early development phase.

The original The Gunfighter, featuring Gregory Peck, tells the story of notorious gunfighter Jimmy Ringo, portrayed by Peck, who rides into town in search of his true love, only to face trouble at every turn. The film combines themes of love and conflict, as Ringo’s journey to reconnect with his past is overshadowed by the challenges he encounters.

Hawke has expressed a deep admiration for The Gunfighter, describing it as one of his favorite films. In a special interview with TCM, he recounted discovering the film after being inspired by Bob Dylan’s song “Brownsville Girl.” This song mentions a Peck western, prompting him to seek out the film with help from his friend and collaborator Richard Linklater.

Recently, Hawke also directed and produced the film Wildcat, which stars his daughter, Maya Hawke, and premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. As fans eagerly await more details on this new take on The Gunfighter, it’s clear that Hawke’s passion for the material could bring a fresh perspective to this beloved classic, making this development an exciting moment for both him and Western film enthusiasts.
