Kacey Musgraves has issued a bold statement regarding a now-viral moment from the 2025 Grammy Awards. During the Sunday, February 2 awards show, the singer lost Best Country Album to Beyoncé, who received a surprise win after being snubbed even a nomination at the Country Music Awards. While Musgraves stood up and clapped for Beyoncé as she made her way to the stage, fans took to social media to declare that her expression appeared anything but genuinely happy for the Cowboy Carter triumph.
“It’s a sensationalistic false narrative meant to pit two talented female artists against each other,” a representative for Musgraves told E! News in a February 3 statement. “There was simply no scowl or expression made.”
Beyoncé, dressed in a low-cut gold gown, won the award over Musgraves’ Deeper Well, Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion, Chris Stapleton’s Higher, and Lainey Wilson’s Whirlwind. This marked the first of three wins for Beyoncé that night, as she also took home the Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Album of the Year—her first time winning the top prize despite being the most decorated Grammy winner of all time, with 35 wins in 99 nominations, including 11 from that evening.
Beyoncé was reportedly so taken aback when her name was called for Top Country Album that her 13-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, had to nudge her to walk to the stage. Musgraves, who wore a shimmering Ralph Lauren outfit, did not leave empty-handed; she awarded her eighth Grammy Award for Best Country Song for “The Architect.” Additionally, she was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance and Best Americana Performance.
