This weekend at the box office featured two new arrivals, with Dog Man and Companion performing well enough to take the top two spots. Companion secured second place after opening with $9.3 million, significantly behind Dog Man’s impressive $36 million, which solidified its position as the highest-grossing movie of the year domestically. Since then, Companion has added a few million to its total, surpassing the $10 million mark at the domestic box office, currently sitting at $11.2 million at the time of writing. The film has also earned $5.2 million internationally, bringing its worldwide gross to $16.5 million.
The cast of Companion includes Jack Quaid, Sophie Thatcher, Lukas Gage, and Megan Sur, and the film was written and directed by Drew Hancock. This project marks Hancock’s feature directorial debut, although he has previously garnered attention as a writer for other projects such as Blue Mountain State and My Dead Ex.
While Companion fell short compared to Dog Man at the box office, it successfully outperformed other notable competition, including Mufasa: The Lion King, which earned $6.3 million to finish in third place, establishing itself as one of the ten biggest movies of 2024. Furthermore, Companion surpassed the earnings of One of Them Days, a comedy featuring Keke Palmer and SZA, and Flight Risk, an aviation thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Mel Gibson. Impressively, Companion outperformed Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is now available for purchase on digital platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV+.
Looking ahead, the theater lineup includes Heart Eyes, a slasher horror film starring Jordana Brewster and Mason Gooding, directed by Josh Ruben. Additionally, Ke Huy Quan will be making waves in a new film titled Love Hurts, coming from director Jonathan Eusebio and featuring Ariana DeBose and former NFL star Marshawn Lynch. Following these releases, Captain America: Brave New World is set to debut as the first major blockbuster of 2025, showcasing Anthony Mackie as Captain America.
