Ben Affleck’s well-known connection to Dunkin’ has led to some memorable commercials, but a recent prank during a 2025 Dunkin’ ad shoot took an unexpected turn when real customers became unwitting participants. The prank involved telling customers at a Medford, Massachusetts drive-through that Dunkin’ was out of coffee, a move that sparked strong reactions.
Behind the Scenes of the Dunkin’ Drive-Through Prank
While promoting their new film The Rip, Affleck and Matt Damon discussed Affleck’s ongoing Dunkin’ partnership. Damon revealed that an unaired commercial featured Affleck announcing to customers at the drive-through that coffee was unavailable. Affleck described the prank’s location and setup:
“We were in Medford, Massachusetts and telling people, ‘We don’t have coffee,’”
he recounted.
Although Affleck and Damon found the prank amusing, many customers did not share their humor. Damon noted that several people in line were heading to work and were not receptive to the joke.
“These guys are on their way to go paint a house or… These guys are, like, working, and they were not having it,”
he explained.
Brand Concerns Over the Controversial Joke
The stunt raised alarms for Dunkin’, as the idea of suggesting the brand was out of coffee risked negative public perception. Damon noted that Dunkin’ promptly halted the prank’s rollout, making it clear such messaging could not be supported by the company. Despite this, Affleck remained supportive of the concept’s creativity, stating, I thought it was genius. He also laughed about the annoyed customers, sharing a line from one who felt inconvenienced:
“I didn’t wait an hour for water,”
Affleck recalled.
Continued Collaboration Beyond the Prank
Even though the prank was abandoned, Affleck’s relationship with Dunkin’ remained strong. Later, he teamed with Damon and Tom Brady for a lengthy seven-minute Dunkin’ commercial featured during the 2025 Super Bowl, highlighting the ongoing partnership between the actor and the coffee brand.
